Product Description

Crossing Over is comprised of compositions that depict the dream state at the end of life. Featuring unique voices in choral composition from around the world, and including several world premiere recordings, Crossing Over will take audiences on a musical and emotional journey that will tap deeply into the human spirit and illuminate the mystery of the end of mortal life and the possibilities of a life beyond.

The album features several well-known contemporary composers, as well as compositional voices that are just gaining notoriety. Skylark will commemorate British composer Sir John Tavener with the first US commercial recording of "Butterfly Dreams", an 8-movement dream-state piece composed in 2003. American composers will be prominently featured as well, with a rare recording of William Schuman's "Carols of Death", based on the poetry of Walt Whitman. Notably, the album will feature two young American compositional voices, with the debut recording of Robert Vuichard's "Heliocentric Meditation" based on the poetry of John Donne, and a recording of "Elegy" by Daniel Elder, based on the tune "Taps", played at United States military funerals. Skylark will also share stunning and seldom-heard music from the Icelandic choral tradition, including the first US recording of "Requiem" by Jón Leifs and an inspiring ancient psalmsetting by contemporary Icelandic composer Anna Thorvaldsdottir. Thorvaldsdottir, recently named as the prestigious New York Philharmonic Kravis Emerging Composer, traveled from Iceland to work with Skylark during the sessions.

Review

"It is an injustice of life that musical elegies and songs of consolation are customarily saved for the rituals following death, rather than employed in the moments immediately preceding the final breath. Skylark's nectarous new release, "Crossing Over," lives at this intersection of existence and the void, and one can only hope to have a soundtrack like this at hand when the time comes." --WQXR, Doyle Armbrust, March 14, 2016

Matthew Guard's excellent chamber choir Skylark has a three-fold mission:

- Create innovative and meaningful programs of stunning vocal beauty
- Educate and inspire the next generation of choral artists
- Support the careers of the most talented vocal artists in America

This special new disc from Sono Luminus shows us the group is well on their way to fulfilling the first of these. The singing is indeed stunningly beautiful, and while I haven't had a chance to hear the 9.1 high definition surround sound Blu ray disc, the stereo recording presents the singers in an acoustical environment that matches the ethereal music.

The disc's program is of real interest and provokes some thought. Whether there's more behind the concept of the transition from life to death depends on your religious beliefs, but there's no denying the beauty of the music Guard has chosen. Daniel Elder's Elegy is a moving choral meditation on the bugle call Taps. I suspect this work by the promising young American composer will be a signature piece for Skylark for a long time to come. Another standout is Robert Vuichard's Heliocentric Meditation, based on John Donne's Meditation XVII. Vuichard, who made a big impression with The Camera Obscura of Jan van Eyck, has another winner in the Donne piece. Two composers to watch!

Other music of special interest comes from Iceland, with pieces by Anna Thorvaldsdottir and Jón Leifs, and from John Taverner, whose classic Butterfly Dreams cycle fits perfectly with the theme. Skylark will be touring with this program, and I'm sure will be inspiring new choral singers, conductors, arrangers and composers. In the meantime, be prepared to be inspired yourself.

This is the second Skylark CD I've purchased, and this one is as brilliantly produced as the first. I first listened to it on my car CD player, and then later put in on my home sound system as the soundtrack to accompany some inside carpentry work I was doing. The emotional reaction I had took me by surprise. The memories of loved ones who had passed on came flooding back with such intensity that I to stop working and just listen. I have now given the CD to a friend who recently lost his father, and I can't think of a better gift for those who are in mourning. In lieu of flowers, give the gift of Crossing Over.

I am a sucker for a capella choir. And finding recorded a capella music from music of the 21st century is incredibly hard to find! This CD is so carefully put together and recorded, crystal clear, of an amazingly overlooked genre of contemporary classical music. I am so happy to have found this recording!

As a composer, I tend to be very critical whenever I listen to choral works. Skylark has NEVER disappointed. This collection, centered around that time when a person is passing from this life to the next, is wonderfully surprising to my ear. This album is a wonderful collection of songs that invoke the mystery that surrounds life's end. By the end of the album I found myself rejoicing rather than being saddened by the subject matter. Thank you, Skylark for a wonderful meditative experience.
