Haunting Celtic instrumentals, October 29, 1999
This review is from: Crossing the Waters (Audio CD)
I happened to buy this CD at the Monticello gift shop in Charlottesville, and listened to it while driving home through the hills and valleys of Northern Virginia during the peak fall leaf season. The music is haunting and melodic, perfect for driving or dreaming. I did a little of both!

Wonderful CD, March 27, 2011
This review is from: Crossing the Waters (Audio CD)
Though I bought this CD from Amazon years ago, I simply have to say now how much I enjoy it! The twelve instrumental pieces on it are lilting and haunting, perfect for a steady walk down a country road with one's dogs. The first four chords of "Mer's Waltz," the first track, get the listener's attention, and all twelve tracks keep the listener's attention until the last note of "Crossing the Waters."
Indeed much of this music does seem to be derived from Celtic tradition, but the cover and back matter also state that Schuch took some of the pieces from the Baroque and Gypsy traditions as well; the title of the tenth track is "The Phantom Gypsy." This piece, and a few others, do have the tendency toward minor mode that one might expect with Gypsy music.
The music on this CD has both a joyful yet pensive flavor -- calming, but a little energizing. No, yoga instructors, these pieces probably wouldn't work to close class, but for walking or for something in the background while one is working, this is just the thing.
