Haunting Celtic instrumentals,
By
This review is from: Crossing the Waters (Audio CD)
I happened to buy this CD at the Monticello gift shop in Charlottesville, and listened to it while driving home through the hills and valleys of Northern Virginia during the peak fall leaf season. The music is haunting and melodic, perfect for driving or dreaming. I did a little of both!

Though I bought this CD from Amazon years ago, I simply have to say now how much I enjoy it! The twelve instrumental pieces on it are lilting and haunting, perfect for a steady walk down a country road with one's dogs. The first four chords of "Mer's Waltz," the first track, get the listener's attention, and all twelve tracks keep the listener's attention until the last note of "Crossing the Waters."
Indeed much of this music does seem to be derived from Celtic tradition, but the cover and back matter also state that Schuch took some of the pieces from the Baroque and Gypsy traditions as well; the title of the tenth track is "The Phantom Gypsy." This piece, and a few others, do have the tendency toward minor mode that one might expect with Gypsy music. The music on this CD has both a joyful yet pensive flavor -- calming, but a little energizing. No, yoga instructors, these pieces probably wouldn't work to close class, but for walking or for something in the background while one is working, this is just the thing.

I had a hard time finding Celtic music with string instruments (other than the harp). This was great.

I bought this CD at Old Sturbridge Village. It was playing while I shopped and I loved it! I played it so much but it was accidently broken in my car. SOoooo I ordered another from OSV. That one came and I loved it as well. However, I can't find it!! I have NEVER had this problem before and naturally the things you like the best (clothes, CDs, mugs, etc. are the ones that you lose, break, stain etc.). After much searching because I couldn't remember the name . . . I found it and have ordered it again. Because I love this music so much and want to review it, I am willing to divulge my deep, dark, slightly embarrassing secret that it is my third copy!! I will not lose this one. It is beautiful, soothing, haunting and memorable.

You know instrumental music is good when you find yourself singing along. I listen to this album over and over, and never get tired of it. Steve Schuch is an extremely gifted musician, and the back up crew is wonderful as well.
