More About the Author

WIN SCOTT ECKERT is the coauthor with Philip José Farmer of the Wold Newton novel THE EVIL IN PEMBERLEY HOUSE (Subterranean Press, 2009), about Patricia Wildman, the daughter of pulp hero Doc Wildman, the bronze champion of justice. Pat Wildman's adventures continue in Eckert's sequel, THE SCARLET JAGUAR.

In 1997, Eckert launched the first Wold Newton website, THE WOLD NEWTON UNIVERSE. He is the editor of and contributor to MYTHS FOR THE MODERN AGE: PHILIP JOSÉ FARMER'S WOLD NEWTON UNIVERSE (MonkeyBrain Books), a 2007 Locus Awards finalist. He has coedited three Green Hornet anthologies for Moonstone Books, and his short fiction tales of The Green Hornet, Zorro, The Avenger, The Phantom, The Scarlet Pimpernel, Hareton Ironcastle, Captain Midnight, Doc Ardan, and Sherlock Holmes, can be found in the pages of various character-themed anthologies from Moonstone Books, as well as anthologies such as THE WORLDS OF PHILIP JOSÉ FARMER (Meteor House), TALES OF THE SHADOWMEN (Black Coat Press), and TALES OF THE WOLD NEWTON UNIVERSE (Titan Books). Eckert's critically acclaimed, encyclopedic CROSSOVERS: A SECRET CHRONOLOGY OF THE WORLD 1 & 2 was released by Black Coat Press in 2010.

His latest work includes the Wold Newton Origins short stories, "Is He in Hell?" and "The Wild Huntsman," found in the first and third volumes of THE WORLDS OF PHILIP JOSÉ FARMER, and the Honey West/T.H.E Cat crossover A GIRL AND HER CAT (coauthored with Matthew Baugh, Moonstone Books), the first new Honey West novel in over 40 years. Win Scott Eckert's book is a fascinating study of the different crossover references that permeate literature. Mr. Eckert weaves these connections into a coherent chronology. Although I thought myself very acquainted with crossovers and popular literature, I found a least ten books that I will now read as a result of Mr. Eckert's research. The book is a must for students of both Philip José Farmer's Wold Newton Universe, H. P. Lovecraft's Cthulhu Mythos and Sherlock Holmes pastiches. Of particular interest to me were revelations concerning crossover links in the late Mr. Farmer's A BARNSTORMER IN OZ. The book is also commended for its marvelous cover by Mark Maddox, its ample reproductions of cover illustrations and movie posters, and an insightful introduction by Kim Newman.

I've finally finished Volume 1 of Win Scott Eckert's Crossovers. It took me a while not only because of my limited time to read, but because with a book like this I don't want to just skim. I try to absorb the material. And volume 2 will be on sale in just a few weeks. The book was everything I hoped it would be and so much more. So many crossovers involving my favorite characters that I had no idea existed but now must seek out. I was surprised by how many movies were included in this first pre-1940 volume. And I've learned sooooo much about pulp characters, Sherlock Holmes, and lots of early books. I was also introduced to the wonderful world of crossovers in the non-English speaking world. I was constantly surprised by the connections that early authors made in their works. And Win has finally convinced me to buy Tales of the Shadowmen books and Myths for the Modern Age, as well as lots of modern anthologies. It was nice to see many of my friends mentioned in this book, either through their WN essays or from books they've written. I'm so looking forward to Volume 2.

Win Scott Eckert, already an incredibly gifted author, has outdone himself with this amazing collection. Using Philip Jose Farmer's series of writings about the interconnected family of literary, pulp, and adventure heroes and villains dubbed the Wold Newton Family, introduced in Farmer's seminal "fictional biographies" TARZAN ALIVE and DOC SAVAGE: HIS APOCALYPTIC LIFE, and similar biographies such as William S. Baring-Gould's SHERLOCK HOLMES OF BAKER STREET and John Pearson's JAMES BOND: THE AUTHORISED BIOGRAPHY as its basis, Mr. Eckert has constructed a chronology of stories where those individuals are portrayed as existing alongside characters from other works of fiction, thus creating an expansive Crossover Universe. Mr. Eckert has put years of thorough research into this work, which originally appeared in a rough form on his website "An Expansion of Philip Jose Farmer's Wold Newton Universe" when it was first created in 1997. Encompassing books, television shows, films, comics (both books and strips), and radio from around the world, this book proves that the crossover is a truly enduring aspect of fiction. Combined with a wonderful cover featuring many of the heroes and villains of this universe by Mark Maddox, an introduction by Kim Newman (himself a writer who frequently uses the crossover concept, resulting in several of his works being listed in the main body of the text, as well as an appendix in the upcoming second volume listing the many established characters who appear in his alternate history cycle ANNO DRACULA), and an appendix listing several television shows that are brought in by crossovers of their own, this work provides hours of endless fascination.
