Book Description

When Katia enrolled at Crossroads Academy she knew things weren’t exactly going to be easy. The sole heir to the worlds’ most powerful vampire, her presence was bound to cause a stir. But nothing could have prepared her for this. Whispers follow everywhere she goes. So does trouble.

Bodies start turning up in nearby Rutland and Katia is sucked into a twisted web of danger and deceit. Haunted by nightmares she can’t explain and a thirst for blood that is never sated, Katia will do whatever it takes to keep her past buried.

Nothing at Crossroads is what it seems and Katia’s secrets may be the darkest of them all.

This is a young adult title recommended for mature readers ages 16+ as it contains some language and violence that may not be appropriate for younger readers.

4.0 out of 5 stars Good, except for the secrets January 19, 2012
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
(cross-posted from the blog Wading Through Electronic Ink)

The Plot

Katia is far from thrilled to be headed to Crossroads Academy. She knows it will be full of snobby rich teen vampires who will only be friendly to her in order to curry favor with her powerful uncle. Still, she's determined to learn all she can, especially about becoming an elite fighter.

In spite of herself, Katia begins to make friends and settle in at Crossroads, until tragedy strikes the nearby town of humans. Suddenly the vampires are afraid for the exposure of their world, and Katia must face a much more personal threat - the truth about her past, which she will do anything to keep secret.

The Good

In spite of the fact that Crossroads features two potentially overdone tropes in the YA paranormal world - vampires and boarding schools - I found the book enjoyable and compelling. Crossroads definitely has enough that is unique to keep a reader engaged, from the cutthroat vampire politics to the oddities of the blood disease.

I liked Katia a lot as a character, largely because she was not a cookie-cutter YA heroine. She establishes fairly early on that she does not care whether other people like her, and at no point does she alter her decidedly negative attitude in order to please anyone else. Yet she demonstrates that she can admit when she is wrong and manages to form bonds with select few others. I admit that at times her hostility toward everyone got on my nerves, but I was able to push past that and like her overall.

The kindle version of a book also has full chapter formatting, with a table of contents and the ability to flip between chapters. I cannot possibly describe how much I appreciate it when authors take the effort to do this.

5.0 out of 5 stars Loved it MORE! December 4, 2011

This book its pretty awesome. The writing skill and flow is so great that I never found myself bored. The idea is new, unique and refreshing. I have read a lot of vampire books and was getting so bored of the same thing but I decided to give this book a try since it was only 99 cents. I have to say this book blew me away and the price is unbelievable. I have paid more for books that didn't come close to how good this book is. Buy this book its worth the money no matter how much it is. I would of paid 10 dollars for this book, its that good.

5.0 out of 5 stars LOVED LOVED LOVED December 4, 2011

A brand new book by a brand new author. . .but it reads like a veteran novel. I became attached to the characters easily and drawn into the story from page 1. The unanswered questions leave no time to put the book down until you get to the end. I like the fact that it's a strong female lead who can make up her mind w/o being sidetracked by her peers or boys. And this story gives a dimension to Vampires that I found refreshing. CAN NOT WAIT for book number 2 in this trilogy!

3.0 out of 5 stars Good Book! 3 1/2 Stars January 1, 2012

Not expecting much going in, I was happy to discover I really enjoyed this book. It manages to be different from most other YA/vampire/forced to go to a paranormal school/popular guy & bad boy fight for leading lady blah blah blah....but it's not because of the vampire angle. There's nothing new there. It's because of the main character and how she interacts with those around her making the relationships very realistic.

Katia, I loved. She is completely her own person and has a dark past that keeps her distant from people by her own choice. There is NO insta-love between her and Luk, or a love triangle (I'm getting tired of those) and she isn't automatically swept up into the classic group of outcast wackadoos that help her find her "place" at school, nor is she amazingly awesome at everything she does. It was refreshing.

There's not much action until the last quarter of the book, which normally might bore me, but somehow it didn't matter. My attention was completely held until the end. Also, the book takes place over almost an entire school year so there isn't a ridiculous amount of plot crammed into a week or two.

Don't get me wrong, there is still a healthy dose of been there done that, (Katia training with her possible love interest)and every now and then I found some inconsistencies with the story line but everything seems to balance out for an enjoyable read. For 99 cents you can't really go wrong. I'm hoping to see more action and more depth to secondary characters in the sequel. Can't wait!

4.0 out of 5 stars Refreshingly Good! February 18, 2012

4.5 stars

I really, really liked this book. I enjoyed it more the longer I read it. At first I worried about similarities to other books (such as Hex Hall) but as the story progressed, it clearly defined itself apart from the rest. This book is definitely one I will remember, and I can't wait to read the sequel.

The Good
First, I really liked the characters. Our narrator Katia is tough, smart, and pulls off sarcasm without being grating. I liked that Katia knows her flaws and quirks and just rolls with them. Even when she develops feelings for the male lead, she stays very true to herself and doesn't desperately chase after him. Plus, I found her obsession with martial arts, weapons, and general bloodthirstiness oddly endearing. The other characters (except for the token jealous/mean-girl) were also interesting and memorable.

Second, the story is paced well. The first half is a little slower but still interesting, because we meet all of the characters, explore Crossroads Academy, and learn about the vampire lore. Once the murders start in the second half, the tension really ramps up. Throughout, the author pulled off a touch of creepy and tense without crossing into the realm of gross/too bloody.

Finally, the novel did a good job of tying up loose ends and feeling like a complete/satisfying story on its own. Some books are relying on cliff hangers to keep people reading. In this case, the main threat was resolved and Katia grew significantly throughout the book, both in terms of fighting skills and maturity. I'm excited to read the sequel because I want to see how the author pushes the characters next.

The Bad
I can only think of one complaint.
