5.0 out of 5 stars Urton Knows it Because he Lived it, May 12, 2011

Gary Urton got to know a small community of Quechua-speaking Indians high on the Maras plain in the Cusco department (province) of Peru. Urton lived in the 12,400-foot-high community of Misminay during 1975 and 1976, performing oral interviews to learn about their agricultural calendar, their cosmology, and how they relied on their environment, especially the night sky.

Urton describes the locals' interpretation of the Southern Cross and the Milky Way in a manner that is both engaging and scientific. He also collected data on the Quechua interpretation of the sun and the moon and their behaviors.

Misminay is an agricultural community that relies on astronomy and cosmology for the planting and harvesting calendar. For the people of this community, proper interpretation and anticipation of the celestial bodies are serious matters that affect the success of crops and the survival of the community.

Urton's book effectively captures both the cosmology and the humanity of the people of Misminay.
