As if our Conscience were a Musical Genius, December 31, 2011
We cannot say the Tracy Chapman is the voice if any Generation. She will never be venerated by the promotional moguls to that extent. Too many people alive today will die never knowing her music. But they do know her message; we all learn it before kindergarten. Here she is, in captivating, soul-penetrating songs, reminding us that it's important to tell the truth, love people, use objects, strive for justice, and be active in the world for all these things. Yes, her voice is beautiful to the point of tears. Yes, her melodies make her music sound effortless. And yes, her virtuosity on the guitar would carry her even if she was neither a singer nor a songwriter. But she is our conscience, our inner voice, our needed reminder that the world is beautiful and can be better; and that we matter and can be better; and that when we are better, the world is a better place. Listen to her music. You won't need an iPod to carry her with you.
