Ben Tausig is one of my favorite crossword constructors. These puzzles are lively and fun to do. These are what puzzles should be like and why I started solving them in the first place. Pick up a copy. You won't be disappointed.

I bought this after flying through Ben Tausig's other book, Gonzo Crosswords.

This is for the thinking-outside-the-box crossword fan. I like all of the pop culture references and the clever themes in each puzzle.

I would definitely recommend this book as it's more fun than your average crossword and you really have to stretch your brain muscles.

Some of the puzzles in this book are great, fresh, and entertaining. Others are total misses with some painful fill. On the whole, it's very entertaining, and the bad puzzles at least have some gems in them. Certainly worth the asking price, but expect varying quality.

All in all, one of the best puzzle collections ever. The clues to bands that are obscure, to say the least, to fogeys like me can be maddening, but the crossing clues or the internet are enough to find the answers. It's unfair of me to say this, but those obscure band clues are very faint echoes of Eugene T. Maleska and his "N.Z. shrub" clues. That said, the collection is worth every penny as is Tausig's online American Values Club crosswords subscription.

Ben Tausig is a bit of a young crossword superstar, and these puzzles do a great job explaining why. I love his use of current topics and edgy content to break out of the standard NYT rut. The only drawback of these compendia of crosswords is that you begin to see the constructor reusing fill clues over and over, which lifts a bit of the aura around his or her creativity. It's necessary, it's understandable, but it takes just a bit of the magic out of it.
