Editorial Reviews

Amazon.com

Because of his tragic death on the set of The Crow, we'll never know if Brandon Lee would have turned one successful film into a popular series. But one look at this tepid sequel suggests that not even the charismatic Lee could have rescued The Crow movies from the burden of a lackluster screenplay. Based on the popular comic books by James O'Barr, this sequel finds Vincent Pérez as a man named Ashe, who is murdered along with his young son by a gang of drug-running thugs under the employ of slimy kingpin Judah Earl (Richard Brooks). Ashe is resurrected with the help of a tattoo artist named Sarah (Mia Kirschner), whereupon he begins a campaign of revenge against his killers. More a rehash than a sequel, the film repeats the grungy, dark look of urban decay from The Crow, but its combination of violence, heavy-handed symbolism, and tacky sentiment make this a film strictly for nihilistic teens. Then again, no movie in which veteran punkster Iggy Pop plays a sleazeball can be considered a total loss. --Jeff Shannon

5.0 out of 5 stars What's everyone's problem with this movie??, July 6, 2002
By
This review is from: The Crow - City of Angels (Collector's Series) (DVD)
I continue to read reviews for this film calling it everything but the actual antichrist itself. I personally found no problem with it other than one line, that's right only one problem with this movie and it's one line. When Ashe pursues Spider Monkey he calls himself "all your worst nightmares rolled into one". Whatever inspired writer David Goyer to sink to 80's horror dialogue I don't know, but anyways on with the review.

This film had incredible production design, great costumes, a superior instrumental score (by Graeme Revell) and an overall gothic feel. I'm not saying it's better than the first film, I am merely saying that if this film had not received so much hype before it's release and people had not panned it for not being Brandon so much than maybe it would have been better received. I for one enjoy this movie very much and hence give it 5 stars

1.0 out of 5 stars Sadly disappointed, July 10, 2000
This review is from: The Crow: City of Angels (DVD)
Maybe if they had slapped another name on this very obviously B flick I could have watched it. But, having the name The Crow on it, I expected the same quality as the original. It was not there! It was a dark drama, but the story just never clicked. It just seemed to be a quick rip off hoping to bank on the cult following established by The Crow with Brandon Lee. I would recommend renting this to see if you can sit through it before wasting the money to buy it.

1.0 out of 5 stars The Hollwood sequel factory turns out another terrible movie, December 26, 2000
By
This review is from: The Crow: City of Angels (DVD)
This is easily one of the worst films I've seen in a long time. This movie tries hard to recycle all of the successful elements of the original Crow movie. . .unfortunately it doesn't have much luck. What it lacks in story and acting and basic logic, it tries to make up for with stylish sodium lighting and a hodge-podge of shadowy religious imagery and quick-cut edited kinky S&M orgies. The director fills out the rest of the hour and a half with shots of tattoos, motercycles, and crows flying around the desolate cityscape.
