I'm only a casual fan of bluegrass and folk music, but I love this album, from beginning to end. Not a single bad song on there.

Martin doesn't sing on any, but provides vocal on one song in his comedic style, which is a pretty funny and "cute" song, if you will.

The deluxe version is worth it for the instrumental versions of two of the songs.

5.0 out of 5 stars Love it!, July 30, 2009
This review is from: The Crow [Limited Edition Pop-Up Digipak] (Audio CD)
I've nearly worn out this CD. The melodies are the type that you end up whistling or humming hours after you hear them. I've been following Steve Martin's career since he was a writer on the Smother's Brothers Show. Since we share the same name I got a kick out of seeing my name in the credits. I've seen his banjo playing and knew he was quite serious about his music. He has brought together some quality talent
and created music that is fresh, fun, and completely satisfying. I can't wait for his next one.

This is a great album! Every song on here os excellent! My favorite song is Pretty Flowers. Dolly Parton and Vince Gill did a great job with this song. If you like the banjo or Bluegrass music then you will love this cd!

Ya gotta love banjo, and I do. No Flatt & Scruggs anywhere. More contemporary.

I always enjoy listening to Steve's music. Saw Steve in concert and had to have the recording. I remember watching Roy Clark on TV and enjoying the unique sound of the banjo. I travel the world and collect music from my visits. I did not have to travel too far for this great music. I highly recommend "The Crow." The Limited Edition Pop-Up Digipak is a fun read and builds a memory for the songs. Great gift because it offers more than just CD packaging.

5.0 out of 5 stars Best Darn Banjo Album Ever in This Universe or Any Other, December 29, 2009
This review is from: The Crow [Limited Edition Pop-Up Digipak] (Audio CD)
I have been a banjo player for 35 years and have listened to a lot of GREAT banjo recordings, but Steve Martin's, The Crow is probably the most creative and original I have ever had the pleasure of listening to. As a fairly accomplished player myself, I was astounded by Steve's virtuosity and technical prowess. Of course his playing ability means nothing if the tunes aren't up to snuff. But in my humble opinion, this is where the album particularly excells. The album contains a perfect mixture of both fast and slow songs, three-finger or Scruggs style and mountain-style or frailing. The fast tunes are original and fun and the slow songs are very beautiful and melodic. Unlike many modern tunes, EVERY song on this CD has a tasteful hook or lick that makes it memorable and desirable for listening to over and over again. In short, I am jealous--of Steve's banjo playing as well as his song writing talent. I highly recommend The Crow.

5.0 out of 5 stars foot tapping fun, August 17, 2009

I knew Steve Martin could play banjo, I didn't know he was such a master of it. With every note you can hear the joy and how much fun he is having.
And the ensemble of friends he chose to play with him makes for an hour of foot tapping fun you will listen to again and again.
