It's about time!,
By Barry Freeman (bfent1@aol.com) (Nashville, Tennessee) - See all my reviews
This review is from: And the Crowd Goes Wild: Relive the Most Celebrated Sporting Events Ever Broadcast (Book and 2 Audio CDs) (Hardcover)
One of the finest sports books I've ever read. Mr's Garner and Costas nailed the essence of some of the most important "happenings" in sports. Even though I knew about all of these events, I haven't ever seen or heard them, all in one place before. I want my Grandchildren to know without the legacy of these tremendous athletes, the players we admire today might have never had someone to emulate. Think of The Babe and Henry Aaron giving Ken Griffey Jr. the drive to inspire, and someday putting his name along side theirs.

I got chills listening to some of the greatest calls in Sports History. However, I was disappointed that icons like Vin Scully, Harry Caray and Ernie Harwell couldn't have made their way on to the list. Also, as big as the King-Riggs match was, Cosell should have been calling "Down Goes Frazier". However, the book and CDs are magical with what is included and are a must have for real sports fans.

I thought the book and cd were great I am only 13 years old, so I have heard of most the stories but never heard the actual call. It is fun to listen to the call as you read and look at the great pictures. I definitely recomend getting this book.

Less Bob,

This book does a nice job of including a wide variety of sports and personalities from boxing to baseball to the women's world cup win. This book seems to have something for every fan. The photos throughout the book are fantastic. My problem with the book/cd is so much of the cd is taken up with Bob Costas yacking. One of the things that makes these moments so great is the fact that they happened out of the blue, or that they seemed to occur against all odds (snatching victory from the jaws of defeat, etc.) For most of the audio there is not much more than a couple seconds that leads into the broadcast exerpt. You get the exhileration of the moment but it doesn't mean nearly as much if you don't also get the minute or so prior to these clips, the utter sense of hopelessness that usually precedes 'the miracle finish'. In many of the tracks Costas is actually talking over the broadcast which is extremely annoying. I understand that some of the audio could be in extremely poor condition and that may have a great deal to do with the brevity for some tracks, but I would've taken the fuzzy, barely intelligible voice of a broadcaster watching it and describing it live as the story unfolded than Bob's summarization.

What a great collection of Sports History and TV and radio highlights. I wish that there was a video version of this book. I would buy that too!

More entertaining than "We Interrupt This Broadcast...",

I enjoyed this set more than the previous title for the mere fact that Bob Costas yaps for far less time than Bill Kurtis on most of the tracks. Costas is, for the most part, concise and sets up very well the moment about to be heard. Bill Kurtis tended to ramble on longer than the news clip on "We Interrupt This Broadcast..." Overall, I really enjoyed these moments, especially as I am too young to remember over 3/4ths of them =), you can still get a tingle hearing the call on the Cal-Stanford game, Wilt's 100th point, etc.

From Babe's homerun in '32 to Michael's winning shots, this book and incredibly realistic CD lead you through sports moments any fan is sure to remember. Got a spoiled kid to buy for? This is sure to put the look of suprise on his face that you usually don't see. Got a sports fanactic nephew? He'll stay up late hours of the night replaying the greatest moments in sports' history. Or do you just want to treat yourself, absorbing the magic? Good idea...I highly reccomend it.
