This review is from: Crowdie & Cream: Memoirs of a Hebridean Childhood (Paperback)
Wonderfully well written memoir, with humor and charm--but not saccharine. MacDonald, who later became involved in Scots Gaelic broadcasting with the BBC, describes his childhood on the Isle of Harris in the Hebrides in the 1920s and 1930s. He talks about the use of Gaelic when he was growing up, but in an unselfconscious way. It reminded me somewhat of Richard Rodriguez's memoir "Hunger of Memory"--how learning English, getting an education and leaving a rural background for city life changes you. MacDonald only touches briefly on that, at least in this part of his memoirs. What goes unmentioned is how that may have contributed to change in the society he left behind. Unlike Spanish, Gaelic is a language whose future is very uncertain.
