Good and sturdy, well made product.

The back of the blade is not flat so it's very hard to get this tool sharp enough to mark lines easily.

I have several Crown tools and all are nicely made, finished well and have a good feel in your hands.

With a little honing this marking knife works fine. The idea is to mark a precise line and cut the wood fibers, to provide a saw or chisel starting point. I also use a razor knife or utility knife with about the same satisfactory result.

It's a nice little tool at a great price. Sharpen it and don't forget to flatten the back and it works great.

There is nothing wrong with this tool. You really are getting your moneys worth here. The only thing to remember is that you will need to do some prep work. It is somewhat sharp but not enough for precision woodworking. You need to flatten one side of the blade and hone the other. It only takes a few minutes. I would have given it 5 stars if it had come to me with a nice edge.

As with any "sharp" tool be prepared to spend a little time sharpening the tool. However, I had to spend a lot of time whipping this one into usable condition. The back had a very pronounced cup in it that took a lot of work to get a flat back To add insult to injury they ground a bevel on the back while removing the burr, a real rookie mistake. I had to regrind the bevel to get a usable edge.

Once i was able to get past these two flaws the marking knife isn't too bad. Seems to hols an edge well and makes nice crisp lines that a chisel fits into nicely.

I have used many "knives" for marking & edging my custom woodwork- when performing a layout for an in-lay or mortise, the fibers of the wood need to be cut @ the surface to prevent "tear-out"- I also cut a fine line on end or diagonal cuts for the same reason-30+ years of woodworking will produce more than a few mistakes-I have learned from mine & the marking knife by Crown is in my view the best marking tool for my "fine line" marking when tear-out is a possibility-it fits my "crippled up" hands well (I'm prone to dropping small tools) it holds an edge very well & is easily resharpened - a word of caution, if your left handed, get the left handed one- it will require "flattening" & finish-sharpening when you receive it- all quality tools do- unless they are massed produced in China- if your in need of a top quality marking knife, for a good price- this is the one I highly recommend-Thanks again Amazon

This knife was very dull when it arrived, and is rather difficult to sharpen. The shoulder on the scale gets in the way of the bevel, making it hard to not sharpen it too. However, its cheap, not Chinese made, and reasonable quality. Its not a super fine tool, but its certainly good enough.

I have grabbed this knife several times already, after a good sharpening it has come in very handy. Has a fairly long shank, so it will take quite a few sharpenings over its life. I have several Crown tools and all are nicely made, finished well and have a good feel in your hands. I would have given this 5 stars, but the blade sharpening from the factory was really botched. Other than that , its a nice addition to your woodworking tools,

I found the blade of good quality sharpened up with ease. The handle is very comfortable and offers great control of the blade for accurate marks. I was also able to use the marker to bevel cut the scribe marks to help guide the blade of my dovetail saw for the cutting of cheeks and tongue for open mortises, If you hand cut joints, you know how difficult it can be to start an accurate true cut and how helpful it is to get a good bevel guide to set your blade in your mark on the wood to help with the initial start of the cut. The blade is flat on one side with an angled skewing chisel edge on the other to allow you to get along side of the blade on your square for precise marks. This is why there is a left and right hand model for you to use your dominate hand in the marking process. I'm thinking of getting a left so as I can be ambidextrous in my marking for odd positions.

Sincerely,

Joseph Handicapable
