Seems to be well made.

Yes, the more expensive ones 'feel better,' but this one performs the job just as well as the other ones.

You'll notice that it's not to be found anywhere on Crown's website.

The first mortise gauge I received was more than a few degrees out of square. Also the knurling on the knob was badly botched, but that alone was not a big deal. I asked for a replacement. The second one was worse! Its beam was so badly warped that it would not slide without being forced. To add insult to injury, the logo was smeared. I took the straight beam from one gauge and the square body from the other, and send the warped and crooked gauge back to Amazon.

This gauge is a real loser. You'll notice that it's not to be found anywhere on Crown's website. I'm guessing they met their price point by using less brass on the face, and taking the Quality Control inspectors off of the production line. Better gauges are available for the same price elsewhere.

I decided to give it a try but the stock wasn't square. There was no way to get consistent markings. I returned the gauge.

This is a nicely made marking gauge with pins, not cutters. Pins are slightly less satisfying to use because they scratch the workpiece rather than cutting the wood fibers, but I have not felt that they present an accuracy issue. I like this gauge because it is versatile -- has a single pin on one side for marking out shoulders on dovetails and tenons, and the other side has dual pins for marking mortises and cheeks. Note that the spacing between the two pins is controlled by a slider with a thumbscrew (rather than some of the fancier gauges which have a wheel at the end to space the pins in micrometer fashion); this is the traditional fashion. Fit and finish is excellent, and I'm giving it five stars because all this, it's affordable, and it's made in England (vs. east asia, where many tools are unfortunately being outsourced to).

Hey, I got what I was looking for and I'm a contented customer. It is well made and has a quality finish, no complaints from me. So far it appears to be quite durable and the adjustable pin moves rather smoothly, I would recommend this to anyone.

Very nicely made marking gauge. Easy to use and small enough to fit in an apron pocket

This tool is fine. I'm not going to rave about it or write home to anyone. It will get the job done, although I always feel like I have to triple check that it didn't go out of range after each mark. Also, be very careful to check the distance of the face once you tighten the screw. It seems to always move on me.

Seems to be well made. There are NO calibrations/scales. The scribing points are Super Sharp, so pay mind how you pick it up. Action is still pretty stiff .. applying some SlipIt to this tool is probably on the agenda. I whacked a star for lack of scale, but I guess that's just a matter of price-point.
