The steel is hard and smooth, which is exactly what we need in a burnisher. It required no extra polishing.

The handle feels comfortable, and the shape provides some protection against cuts. It's easy to slash your hand on a scraper edge as you burnish. That's why some expensive burnishers come with hand-guards. That is a good idea. However, I refuse to pay extra for a piece of machined brass. Instead, I just cut a chunk of wood or leather, put a hole in it, and slip it on the shaft. I prefer the leather-guard because I can make it very large to protect my entire hand, yet it folds-up compactly when I put it back in the drawer. For this burnisher, I don't even use that trick. The handle-shape is good enough.

Unless you want a fancy machined hand-guard, or a specialty-burnisher for exotically shaped scrapers, this is one of the best bargains you'll find. It's simple, elegant and works great right from the box.

There is NO functional difference between this economical burnisher and any of the fancier, expensive models. The traditional-design handle is pretty, easy-to-hold and fairly safe as-is.

This is one of the few tools you can afford to spare-expense on without compromising performance.
Highly Recommended!

Primarily, I use a burnisher for honing the edges of a card scraper. I've tried screwdriver shanks, tire stems and the what not, but nothing beats a burnisher for making a l asting edge. The Crown is long enough to handle comfortably, has an ergonomic grip, and preforms flawlessly with some honing oil.

I haven't used burnishers long enough to know whether the additional expense of the Swiss and German ones is justified. this burnisher works fine for me. b.t.w., the greatest barrier to good burnishing appears to be technique rather than the quality of the burnisher. If you're new to burnishing, there are several online videos that describe the process, 2 of which are on thewoodwhisperer.com website - one depicting grass roots burnishing of scrapers, the other the art of ultimate burnishing of scrapers. if you're interested in burnishing, these 2 videos when taken together illustrate the spectrum of burnishing techniques - a real eye opener for me.

First of all, you don't have to use this to get a good result (probably you already know this). Any smooth hard steel rod should do the job.

Having said that, this simply feels better than my old drill bit shank, in fact this feels like a real quality tool. The steel is hard and smooth over the entire length, the wooden handle looks good and is comfortable to hold, the size of the tool makes it easier to keep the desired angle, and it is nicely balanced.

20 bucks well spent.

I struggled for awhile to get a decent edge on my scrapers using a quality screwdriver as a burnisher. I know it can be done, as testified by many experienced woodworkers, but it wasn't working for me. I watched videos, read articles, and practiced a number of times. I finally gave up and bought this burnisher, and the process became much easier. I only regret not buying this sooner.

Regardless of your method, do yourself a favor and watch a good video guide to sharpening a scraper to see how to do it right (e.g. getting the correct angle and pressure). Even better, make yourself a jig that ensures you use the correct angle every time.

I've tried HSS drill bits, router bit shafts, and worst. The Crown burnisher does the job without fuss. That's what it is suppose to do. Even the hardest scrapper I have formed a nice edge the first time I tried.

Well made burnisher for sharpening scraper cards. If I don't lose it, it will get handed down to my kid some day and will last him until he hands it down.
