Product Description

Product Description

These close grained beech mallets have angled faces that provide a maximum striking surface with reduced wrist and arm fatigue. The handle is chamfered for a comfortable, splinter-free grip and is secured in the head by a long taper, making it impossible for the head to loosen and fly off.

I have been an amateur woodworker for many years. I've always made due without a wooden mallet. Within hours of this tool's arrival, I was in the shop using it. I was amazed at how many times I grabbed the mallet in the span of just a few hours. Now I can't imagine doing woodworking without a wooden mallet. You can safely tap pieces of wood without damaging them. Additionally, the angle of the head is perfect for striking the end of a chisel and the wooden surface won't damage the chisel. I recommend this as an addition for anyone who does any significant amount of woodworking.

I bought this mallet for use with my chisels. Like another reviewer, I sanded the handle down when I got it. The edges were a little too edgy for me so I just rounded them off a bit. Then I hit my chisels with it. It works.

The handle gives off splinters. The head had a chunk of wood split out of the corner. Many of the edges are too sharp. I expected more quality for this price. At about half the price, I would be happy calling it a "mallet blank" that I can make usable by trimming it properly. I will reach out to the manufacturer about this one.

I had bought the same mallet through Lee Valley and the only thing I can say is they look a lot alike, but their are differences. This mallet was lighter in weight and was not finished. The one from Lee Valley had a protective finish on the mallet. On the Lee Valley mallet the Crown Label had clearer print and deeper colors.

The purpose of a wooden mallet is to beat it against a chisel and make beautiful things out of wood. However, the one I received already had a broken chip on the face of the mallet. Hmmm...... I guess that is ok, it is going to get beaten up, but should it have arrived with the face already damaged?

I use this mallet with my wood-handled and plastic-handled chisels. It is pretty much what you expect. I did sand down the handle a bit to fit. Much improvement over my old method (of alternating between a piece of scrap white oak and an actual hammer)!

This isn't the best mallet in the world, the fit and finish isn't that great...it`s definitely a little rough around the edges.
That said it`s a good mallet for the money. I like how it comes unfinished that way you can apply the finish of your choice. I hate lacquer on hand tools so I soaked the mallet in Boiled linseed oil for a few days. It sucked it right up and now its a nice golden brown color. This mallet is good for use with chisels and aligning parts in cabinet work. Spend a few minutes sanding it if you wish and apply a finish and you have yourself a good functional mallet for cheap.

The mallet will do the task. However the finish was very poor. I had to sand the entire mallet to get the splinters and burrs out of it.
