This review is from: Crown Heights: Blacks, Jews, and the 1991 Brooklyn Riot (Brandeis Series in American Jewish History, Culture and Life) (Hardcover)
Blacks running through the streets of a major American cities yelling "death to the Jews." A liberal's nightmare. So unlike most major events in history, this one has been largely and purposely forgotten, except among Orthodox Jews. Fortunately, Prof. Shapiro decided to risk liberal rage by authoring a scholarly book on the subject.
Unfortunately, Shapiro tries too hard to be all things to all parties involved. This was never about Gavin Cato, who was the victim of an accident and, like most accident victims, was simply at the wrong place at the wrong time. This was about Jew-hatred by a large swath of the black community. This was also about the disdain that secular Jews have for their more Orthodox fellow Jews. And unlike the tight and clean summation from the author, everything is far from honkey dory between blacks and Jews. Indeed, the two groups have as little to do with one another as possible. |
