I have tried many types of canned herring but Crown Prince Natural Kipper snacks are the BEST.There is barely any liquid in the can,each can is packed full with delicious smoked herring. These kipper snacks are wild caught and low in sodium so they are a very healthy way to get your Omega 3's,high in protein too. If you are like me and don't always have to time to cook fish, this is a perfect way to enjoy the heart healthy benefits of fish.

It is wonderful that Amazon is making good low-sodium food products like this excellent Crown Prince Kipper Snacks available to those of us who are watching their sodium intake for general health reasons. It is a versatile food that can be eaten as a quick snack, a side dish, or a topping for a particular dish. This kippered herring is definitely much better than many other canned herring products that I have tried. The taste is delicate and satisfying, and the flavor of the herring is not overpowered by salt, sugar, or some type of sauce, such as tomato, paprika, or mustard sauce. There is a pleasant wood smoke aftertaste. The fish are not soaked in liquid, and they are neatly and appetizingly packed inside the can. In comparison, the canned herring under the Appel brand (a product of Germany), for example, contains many added ingredients, a long list that includes salt (400 mg of Sodium per 1/4 cup serving) and sugar. Also, in most European countries, all seafood is affected by the highly polluted waters there, so I am glad that this Crown Prince kippered herring is a product of Canada. I like it as much as I like, occasionally and for different reasons, another product from Canada, the Bar Harbor Wild Herring Fillets in mustard sauce, which has its own distinctive appeal to the palate, although it is not smoked and contains more salt (230 mg Sodium per serving). The price of this Crown Prince product on Amazon averages to about $1.62 (in U.S. dollars) per can when purchased as a case of 24 cans. It usually sells for more than that at retail stores.

For the past 2 years I've been eating Season Brand kippers which I buy at the local supermarket. I've been doing this ever since I discovered the power of omega-3 back in 2005 after my mother died of a heart attack. I discovered that omega-3 lowered my blood pressure, reduced joint/muscle pain and stiffness(probably the result of improved circulation since omega-3 reduces coagulation), raised my HDL and lowered my LDL, and even affected my mental mood. I used to take omega-3 supplements prior to discovering kippers and salmon, but I found that it's better to get it naturally.

I decided to try Crown Prince to see if they were better than Season Brand. They just arrived today, and I opened one immediately and tried it, and I have to say FANTASTIC! I was worried that the low-sodium(70mg per can) would cause them to taste less appealing, specially since I'm not a big fan of the very strong fishy smell of herring. But to my shock, Crown Prince is far superior to Season Brand. Season Brand has 390 mg of sodium per can, AND the herring is tougher and taste much older. The smoke flavor is the same between the two, except that Season Brand burns my throat for some reason. I don't know why, it's probably a chemical in the brine, or a preservative. Crown Prince kippers are more delicate on my palate, didn't burn my throat, softer meat, fresher tasting, especially if you have a sensitive nose like I do.

I'm definitely switching. I'm very impressed with the taste and the fact that I didn't notice the low-sodium, in fact I can actually taste the kippers more cause it's not masked by the high sodium. Also, I noticed that the herring are packaged without the fins, something that I don't like about Season Brand, and my stomach doesn't like the fins in Season Brand either cause I have a sensitive stomach.

In conclusion, I will be a long-time customer of Crown-Prince Kipper Snacks from now on. I sure hope the company doesn't change anything or discontinue this product in the future. Every time I find something I really like, it gets discontinued! I decided to write this review to give back to those of you who have helped me find better and healthier products on amazon. Thanks!

The Crown Prince Natural Wild Caught Kipper Snacks Is a great way to get the daily dosage of fish oil that most doctors now recommend. It is perhaps the richest source of Omega-3 fatty acid to be found anywhere - 2000 grams in each 3.25 oz can. But to get full benefit you must consume all of the oil in the can. That's not a problem if you like fish.
When ordering, however, don't assume that this applies to all of the Crown Prince products - not even their standard Kipper Snacks. Get the Low Sodium version. The use of salt is implied in the word "kipper" and kipper snacks cannot be sodium free. This Crown Prince product contains about 20% of the sodium found in normal kipper snacks. That is low enough to keep it both healthy and delicious.
The cans are easily opened with the attached pull top opener. But in every case or two there is a can in which the pull top opener does not work. This can create a bit of a problem and mess getting the can opened.
My favorite way of enjoying these wonderful fish is to make a simple sandwich of them with whole wheat toast, mustard, chopped sweet onions and fresh ground black pepper. But they are good enough to eat straight out of the can.
This product is available in many health food stores, but as long as Amazon.com is sending them postage free at their present price, this is a best buy at Amazon.

Hard to believe, smoked kippers with very low salt in water!!!!! Add some lemon juice, salt to taste, I have them with eggs for breakfast, on crackers for a snack, with pasta, in olive oil, butter, or tomato. If you are used to salty forms of this product they might take a little getting used to. I wish more companys would let the consumer add salt or sugar after purchase....

I have always loved this brand, my one issue was always the added salt. This completes it, I add a little potassium salt and talk about heart healthy and good taste! Of couse I wish they cost less (sigh) but I say that about everything as living is expensive. I just scooped the last three cases, that should last me for awhile.

These are great kipper snacks. They are very tasty and don't add salt, which is especially good for a low sodium diet! If you've tried other kipper snacks, I think you'll really enjoy these! Good source for Omega-3 too!

I like these kipper snacks because there is no added salt (I find the phrase "Low Sodium Added" unclear).

I'm more of sardine fan but I bought these just to try them, as in the past I'd tried several brands of kipper snacks.

To be brief, these were great. Neatly packed, fresh, flavorful kippers! So, if you love kippers I can't see how you wouldn't love these, and if you've never tried kippers and you want to, I'd say start here. Though if possible you may want to buy a can retail just to see if kippers are for you. Kippers are a world all their own and just because you like other kinds of fish doesn't necessarily mean you'll like kippers.

This is the best canned fish product I have ever tried. Nice lightly smoked flavor, added salt is not missed, generous helping that fills the can, appetizing layout. Excellent! Minor complaint -- the pull tabs don't work on my batch (have to use a can opener) -- presumably this will be corrected shortly (my other Crown Prince product pull-tab cans are OK).
