Over the years, I have had the opportunity to review various training manuals relating to firearms "combatives." The large majority of these manuals are at best: plagiaristic regurgitations of Army Field Manuals or Marine Corps Reference Manuals, or, at worst: colorful anecdotes, liberally dusted with rhetorical hearsay and popular, "gunfighting" opinion.

CRUCIAL ELEMENTS OF POLICE FIREARMS TRAINING, offers a third, more valid and reliable source of information about how to develop firearms skills under duress: one of Good Science with well documented experiences, providing hard-won lessons learned, all from within the law enforcement community.

The book is information rich, with 18 chapters, from FIREARMS-RELATED LAWS (chap. 2) to MALFUNCTIONS (chap. 13) to POST SHOOTING PROCEDURES (chap. 15) and OFF-DUTY CONSIDERATIONS (chap.16) to TARGET ANALYSIS (chap. 18) with a thorough index.

LOOSELEAF LAW PUBLICATIONS always seem to publish books with a unique balance of practical application, while understanding legalities with good science. This book fits this criteria very well.

The useable information printed on the pages of this book is genuinely priceless for any law enforcement officer or military personnel. It is useful for civilians who want a deeper understanding of the complexities of precision combat-shooting under duress, within our society.

Overall, the book is well written, clear yet detailed. Because I'm not an LEO but simply a homeowner who wants to be competent in the use of my handgun, a number of the chapters were interesting, but not particularly relevant. The chapters that do cover actual handgun skills: stance, grip, trigger pull, grouping analysis, etc. are highly informative. The author providea a comprehensive reference to what one should and should not do when shooting a handgun. I think that one who is new to guns would find the information quite usable, yet at the same time on who is experienced with firearms, but is looking to improve would likely find value in it as well. I would recommend this to anyone wanting to improve their shooting skills.
