Love the series but this one missed the mark., July 28, 1999

I have been an avid Deathlands reader for many years and for James Axler to go out this way for his last book was a bit typical deathlands read. I liked the story o.k, but you would think the writer would go out with a bang - instead he seemed to slink away quietly. Too bad from someone who brought this series to the top of post-holocaust reading. Ryan and the group are just too darn trusting which in this world - will get you killed! How come they just eat or drink anything that the bad guys give them? Come on Mr. James, you know you want to come back and give us a superb adventure story sometime. Never say never!

I find myself getting lost in his books, and really enjoy reading them. I collect as many of his books as I can find, but here in Kansas they're really scarse. When I'm lucky enough to find them;then I buy all that I can. This book kept me interested all the way through, but I do wish he could find some measure of happiness in his adventures somewhere. Keep up with the writting they are great!

The story line was all right It would be nice if there wasn't so much emphases put on the bios of the group, but that is a small price to pay. I liked the decription of the surroundings and the layout of the land.I hope in the future there might be a crossover with or even a small hint to the surviolist series maybe they (Ryan's group) come across the redout of the Doctor. just wishing??

Well, as the last book to be written by Laurence James for the series that he brought to life, it wasn't all that spectacular. I hate to say it, but it was filled with all the typical cleches that we have grown used to. Example. The baron that had a history with Ryan and the others, wanted to kill them but ends up forgiving them. Another ville where they are forced to participate in 'tests'. If they pass, they become members of the community, if they fail, they die. Of course we nearly lost one of the characters and when Ryan went for his nightly relief in the woods he was attacked. There were a few suprises though that made up for the usual. The biggest was the meal that they ended up sharing. That suprised me more than you can imagine. Overall the book was average. A real shame. I was hoping for something really spectacular.
