Review

This is chronologically the first part of Mel Comley's Lorne Simpkins trilogy. I thoroughly enjoyed getting to know Lorne as a strong female lead character and look forward to reading the next two books. I found the plot to be gripping with tantalising hints that much more is in store. Highly recommended. by P.E.

Such a gripping read! I read it in a day because I had to know what was going to happen next! Miss K. Jenkins.

I can recommend this as an opener to the series. If you have read the other books, its a must read. if you haven't then it is an excellent place to start in a series of thrillers that are utterly impossible to put down! by  Wistfulskimmie

3.0 out of 5 stars Entertainment for a rainy afternoon May 8, 2012

Format:Kindle Edition|Amazon Verified Purchase
A solid police procedural plotline and a good sense of location, at least for an American reader. The characters were relatively well developed and although predictable, I found the storyline quite readable.

I did find the main character's personal life upheaval and problems given more emphasis than I like in a mystery. In fact at times that seemed to occupy much of the storyline, even overwhelming the actual plot. I also found odd inconsistencies in the main character's reactions. In particular I found the sudden switch from problems with colleagues to apparent friendship in two cases disconcerting. Particularly in the case of the French doctor, the switch from uncomfortable to close friend seemed added only to amplify the personal life turmoil of the main character rather than actually contribute anything to the plot and storyline.

4.0 out of 5 stars Cruel Justice November 11, 2011
Format:Kindle Edition
The first book in the DI Lorne Simpkins set of books. It was a page turner, I read it in two nights as I just wanted to keep going. Even though the murders were gruesome, Mel doesn't go into gory detail like some authors do which, in my opinion, made for better reading.
I look forward to reading more of Lorne's cases, but I hope she gets a few days off as even I was getting tired by her hard work and long hours.

* I bought this from Amazon's UK site which is why it doesn't say "Amazon Verified Purchase"

I will have to read the whole series. The book was good - but sometimes too much detail regarding the personal life of the character.

I finished this book 2 days ago and I've already forgotten the characters. Maybe that's because the story is weak, uneventful and forgettable. Read more

I only read the first third of this book. The crimes are very graphic and gruesome. I read a lot of thrillers and mysteries, but could not get through this one. Not fun.
