Cruel World is a low budget scary thriller more than horror movie that works. Not much titillation (just skimpy bathing suits), not much gore and splatter, but an original story and a competent cast that make this DVD a good watch.
Creepy guy is cheesed off at having been rejected on a Jane Millionaire show and sets up his own real reality show where a contestant is voted off and then offed.
The story has a new twist or two, the movie is well-made, and, unlike many of the genre, does not waste a lot of time or the viewer's time.

Philip (Edward Furlong), a jilted 'Bachelorette' type reality show reject, seeks revenge against the woman (Jaime Pressly) who dumped him on live T.V.. After he murders her, he decides to use her mansion as the sight of his latest reality show project. After all the cameras are all set up and he has his own compound where he can monitor his contestants and communicate with them through a speaker system. Described as a "Survivor for College Kids" type show, four guys and five girls arrive at the mansion with no idea of what they'll have to do in order to win a million bucks. Just like real reality shows the players all fit into stereotypes : the Southern guy is a redneck doofus, the Southern gal is the loosest, the Asian girl is proficient in karate, the Latina curses out her competitors in Spanish, the stud actually tells the girls that he's the one their mothers warned them about and the gay guy is the cattiest one who literally stabs people in the back. The challenges start out tame and get gorier as contestants are "sent home". Stuff like locking themselves in a coffin like crate and rolling around in green goo or cutting raw, bloody meat off of a hanging cow's carcass and then eating it qualify as the challenges. The movie is pretty sick and gory. It's also a clever satire that features some hot chicks (Laura Ramsey, Sanoe Lake, Susan Ward and Aimee Garcia), and one incredibly horny guy (sleazed to perfection by Andrew Keegan). There's another person lurking around the mansion unbeknownst to the kids, Claude (Daniel Franzese), Philip's slow, dimwitted brother. Claude is in charge of slaughtering the contestants after they lose challenges. Franzese and Furlong are magnificently creepy and lots of fun to watch. The film ends on an ambiguous note but I doubt they will be making a sequel to it any time soon. Look for this one on late night cable, it's worth a watch.

honestly i bought this movie because the concept sounded different and the actors although not "popular" per say are some of my faves (andrew keegan!!!) as a previous post stated the execution of the movie could have been better yet it is still an original idea about a reality show loser who retaliates by creating his own reality show where the voted off members actually get killed off. if you like the actors edward furlong, andrew keegan then buy this but if your looking for an "awesome" movie that your going to watch over and over again this is not that movie. also jamie pressly pulls a drew barrymore (think scream). they make her seem like the star but shes gone within the first ten minutes.
