Book Description

July 1, 1997
This is the best Gunkholing area in the entire Sea of Cortez, with 44 anchorages within 38 miles of the two marinas at San Carlos. These anchorages have given the author much pleasure for more than 40 years. This remains the only comprehensive guide to this wonderful cruising ground with over 50 areas described in detail with 57 photos, and 36 detail charts in 92 pages. Includes many personally recorded GPS positions. The guide starts at Guaymas Harbor and runs north up the mainland coast to Bahia Kino and includes the southeast corner of Isla Tiburon and 3 anchorages where it overlaps the Cruising Guide to the Middle Gulf. Shorelines from Mexican 1:50,000 topo series, the only survey of the Gulf using modern methods. Spiral bound, to lie flat.

About the Author

Gerry Cunningham, well known designer of outdoor sports equipment, started surveying and charting the anchorages of the Gulf of California, or Sea of Cortes, over 40 years ago. He published charts of the San Carlos area in 1970, and the first edition of Cruising Guide to San Carlos in 1985. Gerry searches out and surveys all viable anchorages in an area. Where you see an anchor symbol on his charts, that means that he has personally had his hook down there. There are no speculative anchorages.. If he gives a GPSM position, that means he has sat in that spot for at least 15 minutes, recording the readings every minute in order to eliminate any momentary anomalies, and to give you the best possible fix.

Gerry has accurately surveyed and charted over 270 anchorages, which are described in his 3 Cruising Guides covering the Sea of Cortez from Cabo San Lucas up the Baja coast to Bahia de los Angeles, across the Midriff Islands to Bahia Kino and down the mainland coast past San Carlos to Guaymas harbor.

5.0 out of 5 stars Cruising Guide to San Carlos, December 28, 2003
By
Sheryl Innes (Mesa, Arizona United States) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Cruising Guide to San Carlos (Paperback)
I have used this guide for years while sailing in the Sea of Cortez on the mainland side and Baja side. I have also met Gerry personally. He is a wealth of information and I found his book easy to use and even though it is not recent many things do not change in the cruising area that he writes about. The basic landmarks and anchorage guides are still the same. I highly recommend it for use if you enjoy the cruising life in the Sea of Cortez. It provides valuable referances from his point of view because he has been to every place listed in the book!

4.0 out of 5 stars Good info, July 31, 2001
This review is from: Cruising Guide to San Carlos (Paperback)
The info in this book is very good, if just a bit out of date. Since this deals mainly with things that don't change much, being a few years old is not a big drawback.

Of the areas I am familar with, this is right-on, so I expect the same to be true of the rest of the book... I am anxious to use it for more exploration.
