Durable and sensible, September 13, 2009
I bought this for my wife, who needed a somewhat simple and basic small totebag, to try instead of the several pocket book for just daily use (back and forth to work). Since it's separated into several compartments (one primary) and what I call the slide-sleeves, it tends to eliminate the micro-comparments of other styles. Sometimes less is more. This also forces her to think a bit more efficiently, in that she doesn't need to carry "everything" each and evert day.
The styling is a plus, and it seems to be of very durable water resistant material and very good stitching. The main zipper is nylon-type and fine tooth, so it should last a while. Several of the secondary pockets have velcro closures for quick access. My wife said the velcro closure inside was not necessary and sometimes makes it not as easy to just reach in and get inside that pocket quick, but she said some other people may prefer that closure more than not. She likes the convenience of the one outside sleeve that has the velcro, in that it doesn't allow that side pocket to stay wide open.
She said she has no complaints, although the crumpler man design stitching has a few threads that have split off, more so because of always having it rub up against any place you may "toss" the bag and rub up against it. Nothing a minute dab of wood glue or a hot-glue wouldn't cure after the tossing around it sometimes gets. She wants to get one of their medium size ones for light travel and day trips.
I had contacted one of their New York stores about a different product, and received a fast response, and with other options. Very good customer service in these days.
So, if you want a bag thats just a bit different, and appears to be of a quality design and manufacture, we say it's worth the money.

Lightweight, roomy, practical, slim, October 22, 2011
This review is from: Crumpler The Headaitch Small - 3 Tones Messenger Bag (Sports)
I was looking for a black bag with:
--room enough for glasses, MP3, tablet/Kindle, small umbrella, wallet, small water bottle and the usual array of other extras
--exterior zip pocket for cell phone and exterior slip pockets for easy access to papers, books, etc.
--a light-colored interior to make it easy to find things
--two handles of a sufficient drop that at 5'3" I can easily slip it on and off my shoulders
--two handles so I can slip one off, leave the bag on my shoulder and open it to forage for something
--main zippered compartment to protect items during travel/security screen belts, and that opens widely for easy searching
--sturdy fabric and construction to withstand daily abuse and travel
--construction allowing it to sit solidly in place when set down
--at least one interior zippered compartment for credit cards
--lightweight
--easy attachment point for a carabiner with house keys
Having used the Crumpler "The Headaitch Small - 3 tones Messenger bag" for one week, it satisfies all of these requirements EXCEPT the attachment point for the carabiner. I think I have solved that by inserting a quality metal loop from a key chain through the nice but tiny sewn-in Crumpler label, which has an opening in the seam on the outside, so I clip the 'biner through the circle of cord there. Not as easy as if the bag had hardware to attach its handles, where I usually clip the 'biner, but it works. If I clip the biner to the fabric handle, it slides around and causes the handle to flop down.
I absolutely love the light weight, which was the strongest point for me of a rather expensive purse. The fabric is fine, seems to be sturdy, not the most elegant as it is more like canvas than smooth nylon, but seems well made and is fine enough.
The bag is very tailored, and has sleek, clean lines--I hate extra gewgaws, flashy zippers and the other things handbag manufacturers seem to think women want hanging off a utilitarian purse. I could do without the whimsical lime-stitched figure on one side, but it's fine, and the other side is plain.
The exterior zippered pocket is a little awkward since the two deep, nicely sized pockets share a single zipper, but so far it's worked for me. I like exterior zip pockets; these are nicely sized and the zipper is inconspicuous. The single interior zip pocket is also big, running the entire width and length of the interior. The two interior Velcro-closured pockets, also deep and roomy, would probably be better for me without the Velcro.
The lime interior is fun! even if it matches no color I ever wear. Makes it easy to find things.
I spent a lot of time searching for this bag, coming from my second Ellington in-flight small tote type that they've changed the styling on, that's HEAVY, and that wears out its handles in a couple of years--though its many pockets are wonderful. I do, however, really miss a small exterior pocket where pens/pencils could be easily retrieved, and some kind of interior attachment for key fobs is also needed.
It came down to this Headaitch (what kind of name is that?) and the Baggalini Berlin bag. The Berlin has zippers as decoration, which I didn't care for, was noticeably heavier even without the shoulder strap, and was nowhere close to the clean, tailored lines of this one. The Berlin would have worked a bit better due to more zippered compartments, but I finally preferred the Headaitch for the weight and uncluttered styling. I usually lug around a heckuva lot of things in my purse and the Headaitch is great for accommodating them, but will still not fall over even when it isn't overfilled.
Overall, the bag seems very well made and well thought out. The handles are stitched and so could be repaired by a good cobbler if/when the stitching wears, while the fabric appears to be sturdy enough to last longer than many other purse handles I've had (speculation at this point).
The dimensions stated on Amazon of 4 x 11 x 12.6 inches are about correct, though the 11 inches is the height of the purse from the center zipper to the bottom, and the handles add another 8 inches or so. I do notice the drop of the handles is not quite as generous as the Ellington (~ 10 inches) but I can live with it.
Though expensive in my mind, a solid purse that's used heavily every day is a necessity. I couldn't find any prices better than on Amazon for black. Free shipping and returns make it easy.
An excellent purse that fits almost all of my needs.
UPDATE 3 MONTHS LATER:
I won't change the star rating because the bag is well made, but, there are issues: Pockets are too deep. That's good when stashing big, long items, of course--but what I need are a couple of additional small pockets, both interior and exterior. Since all pockets extend from the top of the bag to the bottom, smaller items all fall to the bottom and it's dig, dig, dig to find them. I didn't have this problem with former purses that had smaller pockets. If Crumpler is listening, add (don't subtract) a couple of smaller pockets for little things. Most especially, a smaller exterior zip for the cell phone. Finally: the Velcro closures are too large and too aggressive for me. Am thinking of removing the exterior pocket closures and wish I could reduce the size of the interior ones.
