4.0 out of 5 stars For the anime lover in you April 19, 2011

Crunchyroll is a website that has made arrangements with Japan to stream anime (and dramas) from Japan. If you pay for a membership you get to see the new episodes the same day they come out in Japan, free members gets to see those episodes a week later. They came out with an app that runs on Android that lists the new shows and plays them on your phone or tablet. If you are a paid member you get to see the newest, and like the website, free members still get their newest episodes a week later.

I really like this app because it streams to my phone flawlessly. I still visit their website, but on my computer depending on the day and time I would have issues with buffering. (I still do on their site, especially if it is a day where a popular series like Bleach or Naruto Shippuuden are running their new episode. I don't have the buffering issue on my phone at all.

You also get to see what new shows are airing in Japan. The only downside is if it is a short series (13 episodes or less) and you don't religiously watch those episodes every week once the series is done and it's a new season it is no longer on the list for the phone. You can still see them by going to the website, but it would be nice if there was a way to keep those episodes on the app or at least let you search them out so you can finish.

4.0 out of 5 stars No HD for subscribers, dissapointing (Updated 02/27/2012) November 16, 2011

Original Review (2 stars out of 5 on 11/16/2011):
I have the paid Crunchyroll membership and I receive HD content on all my other devices (Roku, ipad, iphone 4, website). I tried this on the new Kindle Fire, and the lack of HD is highly dissapointing. If you are a non member, this lack of HD will not matter, but it's really bad that there is no HD for subscribers, especially when Hulu plus has HD anime.

Update 02/27/2012:
I re-visited this app on my Kindle Fire couple weeks ago, and noticed that the quality is A LOT better than it used to be. I can't tell if it's 720p, but the picture is definitely sharp enough that I'd call it close to HD. I am now re-rating this to 4 out of 5 stars. It'd be nice if Crunchyroll can figure out how to get rid of the Kindle Fire status bar at the bottom like Hulu and Netflix apps did.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great if you can accept the HD caveat November 29, 2011

Do you like Anime? You want to watch Anime for free on your Android device? Then this is the way to go.

As another reviewer stated, not getting HD Anime as a subscriber is kind of annoying, but if all you want is to watch a show, this isn't bad. I wouldn't be surprised if they fix this with a later version, or at least I hope they do. If I could connect my Kindle Fire to the TV I might be a little more upset about the lack of HD, but on the Kindle Fire's 7" screen, I'm mostly OK with the standard definition stuff.

Something else missing from the app, or at least from what I've seen, is that the shows you have in your favorites list don't really seem to show up in the app. This means you have to browse to whatever Anime or Drama you want to watch without consideration of what you do on your Crunchyroll account. This is a bigger deal for me than not having HD.

If Crunchyroll can give me HD and give me access to my tagged favorites, as the Roku app can, then this will be a great addition to any Android device. Until then, as long as you are OK with the HD and favorite show limitation, it's certainly worth the price (free).

3.0 out of 5 stars Great, but they should fix it. July 14, 2012

For me, episodes run smoothly, but that is only for animes that let you through. Most of the new ones I want to watch make me force close the app. They should fix this.

I'd try watching an anime but after 2 minutes, it would exit out of the video. Very disappointing. I'm going to unsubscribe.
