Lots of good moments,

Surprisingly, I heard a rave review for this album on NPR and I picked up the album on their recommendation. I've had it boomin' in my Bimmer for a few days now and overall I'm satisfied.
This album is not quite "solid gold". However, no track is a total loss here. Rather, a few just jump out as a bit annoying. That said, when this music hits its stride it's powerful and has me reaching for the volume to make it louder. So far track 9 ("Back Then" by Mike Jones) has stood out as the most distinctive and intriguing track on the mix. The track by Three 6 Mafia is also quite good. Towards the end one song, "icy" by Gucci Mane, does seem to break the mold the others were cut from and feels a bit more like hip-hop/r&b than crunk. After 16 songs of hard spittin', crooning computerized vocals induce a "WTF is this?" reaction. Overall, I recommend this album so long as you're okay with frequent N-bombs, women portrayed as little more than ornaments and ho's, and the frequent juxtaposition of diamonds to dicks. |
