5.0 out of 5 stars Unbelievable!
I have now finished this and the second book in the series and can't wait to read the third. I had never heard of the Children's Crusade before and it is unbelievable what these people went through and their bondage to the church and their pennance. I highly recommend this series. I will never forget these people.

3.0 out of 5 stars Children's Crusade Gallant and Sad
I read this for my bookclub and we all enjoyed the book in general. The story is very sad but the characters all held our interest; the journey was long and hard. The ending somewhat predictable.

I haven't actually finished this book, but I am so impressed with how well it is written that I had to write a review. The author does a wonderful job of placing you right in the middle ages --it is clear he knows of what he writes with descriptions of clothes, and the way the characters speak. Yet all the medieval description is part of the action --it is not the author stopping the story to tell us how much he knows about the middle ages. For example, the clothes are described when one of the rich boys on the crusade is robbed of his fine clothes and must disrobe.
The characters are real and complex. Not sure right now who the "good guy" is as all the main characters sometimes do bad things. This is what makes them so real. Despite the length of the book, it is proving to be a fast read because once I start a chapter I want to finish it. So far I have not come to any boring passages. Usually I find myself skipping pages when the author goes on with long passages of descriptive language or plot exposition. This author keeps the action going and the reading brisk.
Can't wait to finish this so I can read the next books in the series. I am really surprised at how good this is!!

5.0 out of 5 stars Crusade Of Tears, January 23, 2008
This review is from: Crusade of Tears (The Journey of Souls Series #1) (Paperback)
I have just completed reading this book. It was given as a Christmas present and I really love the content. We know nothing of the suffering of the people of the dark ages other than what we can gleen from books such as this one. I highly recommend it to all ages as it shows us what we enjoy and have today because of what others have done before us.

5.0 out of 5 stars Wonderful glimpse into 13th century history, September 10, 2010
This review is from: Crusade of Tears (The Journey of Souls Series #1) (Paperback)
Crusade of Tears was well written. Not only did Baker portray the Children's Crusade in a manner that puts the reader into the story, he is also poetic in his writing and skillful in his use of metaphor to address the timeless depravity of man and man's need before a holy God. It was an excellent read. My only complaint is that I find it difficult to believe that people were generally hateful and harsh, especially to children. I am anxious to read more of the series.
