4.0 out of 5 stars Fight for justice!, July 17, 2003

This review is from: Crusader No Remorse (Video Game)
This was a gem for the Sega Saturn! The game takes place in the future, where you were once an enforcer that was set-up by your higher-ups, who attempted to kill you. Now you've banded with an underground resistance, ready for vengeance!

The game is played with a 3/4-overhead perspective, which can take some getting used to, but the variety of weapons is great. The one thing that didn't make sense to me was the hand-to-hand action missing from the character you control, but otherwise I loved it.

The controls take some use getting used to, especially with all the weapons at your disposal as you progress, but the interactive backgrounds definitely provide some cruel ways to kill the enemies in this game, especially if you are sadistic. From enemies being diced up in fans to enemies being gunned down by remote-controlled robots, the designers were definitely imaginative when creating these possible scenes, probably from watching Robocop or Blade Runner.

The backgrounds range from industrial, chemical complexes to squeaky-clean offices to spaceship hangars. The graphics of the game do a great job to convey where you are, while the music changes when your character is in trouble or is safely sneaking around. The AI in this game was much better than the one in the PlayStation port, as here the computer would often try to dodge attacks or even take cover, whereas the PS version, usually had enemies standing their ground or walking into the line of fire. The CGI and video sequences were well done and served to carry on the story without any problem. The plot itself is very straight-forward, with the primary focus on espionage and action.

Aside from your character unable to engage in hand-to-hand, you are given the actions of rolling along the ground, ducking, walking, and running, all of which are vital if you want to avoid being killed or detected in this game. It takes some time to master these, as well as the angle the game is played from, but you'll quickly get used to it. This game is actually quite engaging and took some time to complete, but I definitely enjoyed it.

One element which can be useful in this game is strategy, as you can create traps in this game, but whether that was intentional by the creators or not is unknown. Instead of the traditional gunfight where you aim to shoot your foe, try shooting what they are standing next to sometime to see if anything sadistically-fun happens. Try closing a door as someone is chasing after you. Conservation of ammo is important in this game.

This game was just fun for the action, espionage, and the sadistic nature in one it can bring out after mastering the basic moves in the game's gameplay.
