4.0 out of 5 stars Everyone missed the boat on this band....., January 13, 2006
This review is from: Crush (Audio CD)
The Doughboys were one of the top power-pop bands of the 1990's that got stuck in the middle of two genres....stuck in between grunge and the resurgence of punk. Possibly because they were from Canada, and definitely because power-pop tends to be the red-headed stepchild of the music industry, this band never got the credit or audience it deserved (but ironically, was always well respected). The guitar assault on this album, coupled with a new bass player who could sing and write, and improved production style makes this album more listener friendly than the previous outing, 'Happy Accidents.' While 'Happy Accidents' might actually be a better album pound for pound, the best moments on this album (Melt, Shine, Tearing Away) out-shine (pun) most of the songs on the previous album. Definitely drawing upon Husker styles, so if you are a fan of Mould, this is worth trying out. The only danger with this album is that some of the lesser songs definitely show a trend towards more mainstream songwriting, which was never a characteristic of the band. Even so, the highs on this album rock hard. This album is still in heavy rotations with me, even close to 13 years after it was released. Go. Get it. Now.

A Kid's Review
This review is from: Crush (Audio CD)
I can't believe no one has reviewed this album, nor why there isn't an album cover preview available. These guys are great. I don't have any of their other CDs, but I have this one, and I love almost every song on it. If you like the early ninety rock (not really grunge) sound, you will like these guys. Sorry I can't be very helpful, but I tried my best.
