Editorial Reviews

IZZ s new studio album, Crush of Night, scheduled for release on May 1st, serves as Part 2 of a 3-part series of thematic albums that began with The Darkened Room (TDR) in 2009. Featuring a guest appearance by Gary Green of Gentle Giant on Words and Miracles (Electric guitar, Guitar solos and backing vocals) and The Crush of Night (guitar solo), IZZ brings their characteristic sense of melody to the fore on this album, while at the same time fusing high reaching emotion with the driving impact that IZZ fans have come to identify with the band. From the opening vocal melody of You ve Got a Time, to the guitar-driven Words and Miracles featuring the distinctive guitar sound of Gary Green, to the stirring emotion of Half the Way, culminating with the impressive 26 minute suite that shares its name with the album title, Crush of Night passionately delivers on all fronts by creating a sound that is uniquely IZZ. The 26-minute suite, Crush of Night, is divided into two tracks, This Reality and The Crush of Night. Serving as the musical, lyrical and emotional centerpiece for the album, this piece brings together the struggle that surrounds one's search for meaning. The Crush of Night suite runs a musical panorama, weaving melodic and rhythmic themes with innovative and fresh diversity. IZZ had the distinct pleasure of having Gary Green join them in the recording process. "Having Gary come to the studio and record with us was an amazing experience, says IZZ bassist John Galgano. Gary came in and not only added his signature guitar playing, but also contributed to the writing, added a few blistering solos and even sang backing vocals on Words and Miracles. It is a great honor to have Gary playing alongside us on this record and we know that fans of Gary will enjoy the guitar artistry that he s added to this IZZ record.

I am a big fan of Izz and this release is like a spiritual journey rather than a collection of songs. From start to finish this captivates and never lets up. This is the second part of a trilogy and as much as I loved "The Darkened Room" this is even better. Izz is a rare band that improves with each release without re-hashing old ideas. It seems they have an endless well of musical ideas.

The song arrangements are stellar. They evolve and you never know what direction it will go, but the music always is grounded by good melody and catchy hooks. I am amazed by the musicianship and vocals. The dual drumming is in perfect sync and the mood can change from soothing to an all out assault in a matter of seconds. The only other band I can think of with dual drummers of this level was King Crimson.

This will be hard to beat for my pick of album of the year. This clicked for me instantly and just gets better with repeated listens. And for you Gentle Giant fans, guitarist Gary Green plays on two songs and helped co-write "Words and Miracles". Good to hear you again Gary! Thanks Izz for more awesome music and I can't wait for part three.

Finally, the production and mix on this is amazing.

I don't really know what I was expecting. I liked Darkened Room and I thought that this CD would be worth a listen. I was completely blown away and Crush of Night has instantly become one of my favorite albums. If you're a prog fan, you're going to like this one. A lot.

For most albums, you can say it sounds like this band or that band, but I can't figure that out for this one. Crush of Night has a distinct and original sound. In 20 years, I'm going to be saying "That new album by so and so sounds a lot like Izz".

The second release in a trilogy that began with The Darkened Room, Crush Of Night takes up where its predecessor left off. Dealing largely with themes of mortality, truth, and faith during the journey from birth to death, it extends the story to new planes. The work of a band that is maturing before our eyes and ears, the songwriting here is simply superb: confident, challenging, literate, melodic, and nuanced. These songs just leap out at you. Where once IZZ songs would have a single great hook, many now have three or four, and the music is brimming with ideas.

Songs like Almost Over and Solid Ground carry on in much the same vein as The Darkened Room's Stumbling, Ticking, and The Message: Prog-Pop gems that are meaty enough to dig into musically which do not overstay their welcome and offer great melodies and hooks that a lot of Prog sadly lacks. The theme of Can't Feel The Earth, which took up a good chunk of The Darkened Room, features prominently in the lyrics and chorus of Solid Ground - an excellent way to tie the two albums together without simply rehashing the same musical turf. Similar lyrical tie-ins abound throughout.

The album's centerpiece, the epic This Reality/The Crush Of Night, is a substantial meal, to say the least, deeply beautiful and spiritual as IZZ creates the most atmospheric piece they've ever attempted. Anmarie Byrnes sounds absolutely lovely here and the prominence of her strong, soaring vocals playing off those of the Galgano brothers, Tom and John, is striking. Twin percussionists Greg DiMiceli (acoustic drums) and Brian Coralian (electronic drums) anchor the proceedings in the dynamically complementary way we've come to expect.

I couldn't find this for the longest time.

I was introduced to Izz several years ago thru "Delicious Agony" progressive rock radio (internet).
At that time it was nowhere to be found, neither Amazon nor iTunes offered it.
Then low and behold it appeared on a search for something else.
I snatched it up immediately and have been very happy.

If you like it I would also recommend: It Bites and Frost.
