A New Richard,
By
This review is from: Crush (Audio CD)
I too am a die hard fan of Richard and I have to say this album did disappoint me too when I first bought it. Having said that though this is one of those albums that the more you play it the more it grows on you. I guess this is somewhat of a change of direction for Richard, a move away slightly from his trade mark passionate and spirited playing. I loved Chill Factor and Jumpin Off, this is the Richard we all know and love, but time moves on, artists evolve and we have to get used to change. This is a good album and over time you really warm to it. I cant say I'm fond of the vocal tracks and my only real complaint would be that there are too many of them - lets have a chance to savour the one thing Richard is good at, spirited and moody sax playing. Unfortunately its not until tracks 9 and 10 that we get a chance to really appreciate this. My favourite tracks are the title track "Crush" and track 9 "Shotgun".

Nice Try, Richard,

This is kind of different from his albums before. However, I like this album so much and I can see his changes here. Maybe he wanted to try some other kinds of music, and I like it very much. We can see his change in whole tracks, more moody and rhythmic Richard, especially in "Q.T.", "Work All Night", and "Sticky Wicked". My Favourites are "Crush", "Q.T.", "Shotgun", and "Sticky Wicked."Artists need change, or musics can get boring, I think.

Good smooth jazz album with a few of memorable favorites,

This is my first Richard Elliot CD which I bought with the recommendation of you other folks. I was not disappointed with the exception of the unmemorable vocal numbers, which I felt were unnecessary and detracted from the CD (In my opinion). This is a sultry and sensous sax cd for those who like smooth jazz. My personal favorites are "Crush", Track 1 "Still Sweet on you", Track 3, "Shotgun", Track 9, and "Sticky Wicked" Track 10.

Smooth And Funky,
By A Customer

If you are looking to chill but not nod off, Crush is for you. Some smooth jazz CDs are so dreamy they can put you to sleep, but Richard Elliot's latest is a nice mix of smooth and funky. I have played this CD every day since it arrived. Favorite tracks are "Crush", "Work All Night", and the "Shotgun."

Great Crush...!,

Richard's sultry sax plays track the are very smooth! The title cut Crush is a great compliment to the CD's name. I have long listened to Elliot's "musical paint" and his artistic creation continue to "wow" jazz listeners like me!

Letdown,

I'm a huge R.E. fan, but can't understand how he could produce such a generic c.d. . " JUMPIN OFF" and "CHILL FACTOR" are both outstanding sets with funk, soul, great production , and magic. This disc is uninteresting drivel. There are literally no really good cuts on this one. PLease Richard , get back that magic for the next disc. Pass on this one and get the last two.

Richard is the man for sure. He has a great variety ofsoft, spirited, and uptempo. Melrose Diner is an awesome joint. Also, getting the legendary Jonathan Butler is a plus. Thank you Richard, you are a treasure. Omar Oliver

I love Richard Elliott and this cd has some good music/songs on it. If you like Richard Elliott, or just enjoy good low key jazz music, then I would recommend this cd for you. It's great for relaxing.

I Have A Crush On Crush,

This was the best jazz album I bought in 2001 if not ever. I still listen to this cd frequently at work and I just love it. Shotgun was already a classic to me but I just love the jazz version Richard Elliot did. If I Kissed You with Johnathan Butler is one of my favorite songs period. I have used it on my Love Mix cds. Crush is smooth, has a little funk and gets the job done without a doubt. It may have come out in 2001 but the sounds are everlasting.

Elliot smooth yet funky,
By

Having listened to a lot of smooth jazz in the eighties and nineties I decided to pick the best to put on my I-Pod; this disc made the cut. It is I believe one of Richard Elliot's best recordings. The usually blistering , up-tempo-funkiness is toned down somewhat to reveal a different aspect of his horn. Often smooth jazz players are criticized for being bland and soulless, void of emotion but rather just going through the motions. This may be the case with some artists but I believe Elliot is a genuine player within his genre. His style on this disc reminds me of the late Grover Washington. One listen to "Q.T." and you'll see what I mean. The slow groove is infectious and the perfect type of music for cruising the beach on a beautiful day. The addition of another fusion pioneer, Jeff Lorber on keyboards adds a textured dimension to the music that filters harmoniously with the soulful, pop-oriented horn of Elliot. Mt least favorite songs(ommitted from the I-Pod)are those vocal tracks that are essentially R&B tracks. They are a little sappy, with titles like "If I Kissed You" and "Brand New Lover" you get the picture. On the other hand one of the best tracks is when he returns to his funky style, as on the classic Jr. Walker & The All-Stars pop hit "Shotgun." The addition of additional horns is a nice touch, a sort of horn chorus and the guitar work is killer on this track. Richard Elliot is featured here on this disc funky and other times mellow for a pretty nice offering of smooth jazz. If you don't like smooth jazz at all than get the funk away from this one because it is funky but mellow.
