A Great Movie Few People Are Noticing, June 22, 2000
By A Customer
Crusher Joe was a sensation when it came out in Japan in the 1980's. It set new ground in the space adventure genre with its quick-moving plot and action sequences, and colorful anime style. This was in sharp contrast to most other 80's anime which were rather on the dry side.
In addition, the film has an intriguing plot which involves a team of bounty hunters on a mission to recover a hybernating beauty and an awesome secret weapon.
This movies has it all, well choreographed space battles, great gun battles, hilarious comic sequences (check out the disco brawl) rollercoaster-like chases and an unforgettable symphonic score.
The animation is awesome. Don't give me this "dated" stuff so many reviewers are applying to older anime. This stuff is better than some of the cr-p we have coming out today, which is cheaply done with computers. Saying Crusher Joe is dated would be like saying Fantasia is dated. Good anime holds, and this movie has it!
I am really surprised this movie has not received more attention from the anime crowd, considering it is a first rate flick.
If this movie is missing from your anime collection, you are missing a piece of anime history.
The movie is first rate. No computer generated bunkum here, just real artistic cinematography, in a work that was obviously a labor of love.
I also recommend the Crusher Joe OVA which lives up to the complexity, design, plot and animation level of the first film.
If you have not seen Crusher Joe, rent it, borrow it, steal it or better yet, buy it, but do get to see this film!
