Editorial Reviews

An exciting and insightful re-telling of the classic legend. This historically faithful drama challenges the morals of the time as Crusoe, now an American slave trader, confronts a "Friday" who is his equal. Renowned cinematographer Caleb Deschanel directs in visually spectacular style.

I viewed this movie on TV and in Spanish, and it mattered not. This is visual movie making at its best, the story being told through gripping physical encounters and gut-wrenching emotions on an enchanting island. Crusoe and Friday are fiercely strong individuals who must learn to cooperate to survive. But this version goes beyond physical survival and focuses on how Crusoe, a slave trader, and Friday, a Black, learn to trust, respect, and finally to help each other. The mythic feel of the film is enhanced by wondrous cinematography and sparkling music. Thanks Aidan Quinn, Ade Sapara, and Director Celeb Deschanel for this delightful movie.

I loved the movie Crusoe, starring Aiden Quinn, much more than the more recent Robinson Crusoe starring Pierce Brosnan. The latter film tends to spoon feed the premise and meaning of the story to the viewer. Crusoe lets the viewer make the final decision. Crusoe is a very lonely yet hauntingly beautiful film. The music reflects the adventure and immerses the viewer in the natural wonder of the island and environment of the castaway.
The silence and loneliness of the film reflects the reality of what a castaway would really go through. Crusoe is not a typical Survivoresque film, overdramatized and overdone. Crusoe is about learning through nature where all people are equal. The message of the powerful learning experience in which Crusoe undergoes is displayed for the viewer without words but in action. To me that is much more powerful than the wordiness of the more recent Robinson Crusoe film with Pierce Brosnon.

I first saw this film on the Independent Film Channel years ago and had to add it to my VHS collection. I came back to purchase the DVD and was reading the reviews. This is a beautifully filmed movie and the most accurate version I have seen. I could watch it on endless loop. Then I saw the "BOOORING" review! This reviewer first states that it doesn't deserve the PG-13 rating because it has no action, then states it depictics native captives having their throats cut in a very graphic, disturbing manner. And then states that it is racist towards whites. Yes, this movie is both graphic and realistic. It is a haunting version of what slavery was all about - slavery and the procuring of slaves was a "greedy, selfish, and cruel" chaper in our nations history. Natives did not come willingly. If you want to face the truth in a wonderfully filmed and realistic movie, buy this. By the way, I am white.

I echo the praise, below, for this remarkable 'small' film. In addition, one should mention the splendid camera direction and haunting score.

If the world can have Pierce Brosnan on DVD, we deserve Aidan Quinn and company on disc also.

This film seems to me a most intelligent and thoughtful rehandling of the subject. Normally I find an updating of a story inappropriate and objectionable, but this one works well, both illuminating the period in which it is set - the early 19th century - and proving a sensitive study of the effects of isolation on the personality of an individual man. I have now seen it three times and am sure that I shall continue to watch it frequently in the future.

This is not another Robinson Crusoe movie. In fact it doesn't follow the book. However it is a very realistic portrayal of life in 1808. Our hero is a slave trader who is ship wreaked on an Island on a mission to make a quick buck getting slaves. What happens is the core of the plot and done extremely well. The acting is great and realistic. I watched is twice.

Review of the film not the VHS product: I do believe this to be a better film then Robinson Crusoe (with Pierce Brosnan) and deserves a re-release on DVD.
@ Benjamin: I second the motion. `Robinson Crusoe On Mars' (1964) another good film.

I want this movie on DVD. And I want it now. I want it in exactly the way 'boooring' doesn't. Unfortunately, one can't teach a baboon depth. You either evolved it, or you didn't.

Concerned for the future.
