1. Cruzar La Cara de La Luna/To Cross the Face of the Moon

Editorial Reviews

Cruzar La Cara de la Luna/To Cross the Face of the Moon is the world's first opera composed for mariachi. Exploring the fusion of opera and mariachi has taken both art forms in new directions. Commissioned in celebration of the Mexican anniversaries of independence and revolution, Cruzar brought together composer José 'Pepe' Martínez, the music director of the storied Mariachi Vargas de Tecalitlán, and eminent Broadway stage director and writer Leonard Foglia. Together they have created an emotional and compelling work that remains true to its Mariachi culture and tells a story that resonates with all. This is a recording of the world premiere performance, which brought this glorious new piece of music theater to life with unforgettable virtuosity, energy and passion.

Attended the Mariachi Vargas concert in San Antonio, Texas last December. The opera, Cruzar la Cara de la Luna was mentioned. Some of its background was given by Mariachi Vargas' director, who was contracted to create the music for the opera's story. He presented one of the opera's singers. She performed one of its songs. The audience was wowed! I was thrilled to hear the thunderous applause rendered the performance. Mariachi programs do not showcase such songs. Nor, create this type of musical scores! (Of course, this particular Mariachi is always surprising its fans through its musical program selections.) Anyway, I couldn't get the performance out of my mind. When I got home, I thought I'd check Amazon's extensive music collection to see if the opera had been recorded and was available. To my surprise, I located it and ordered it immediately. Did not know if I would even like it once I received it. When the CD arrived, I played it immediately and have been playing it ever since! I have never attended an opera; but have enjoyed listening to specific arias. Even though, I have not seen a live performance of Cruzar la Cara de la Luna, I feel this CD, provides a clear story line of the opera and some of the most beautiful music I have ever heard! I throughly recommend purchase of this CD!

5.0 out of 5 stars Terrific Operetta May 3, 2013
Format:Audio CD|Verified Purchase
We saw this operetta live a few weeks ago and knew instantly that we wanted to have the music. This recording is not the best quality, but is probably the best available, since the operetta is not done that frequently. Nonetheless, if you love the music, I would recommend getting a copy!

5.0 out of 5 stars A wonderful modern opera. May 10, 2014
Format:Audio CD|Verified Purchase
This opera is being presented at Arizona Opera in the 2014/2015 season. It is a newly commissioned work from Dallas Opera I think. I bought it so I could learn the music before seeing it preformed. This is the kind of thing that will bring the younger audience back to the opera.

I saw this opera in Houston and was immediately captivated by both the story and the music. So, I immediately bought this CD when I got home from the opera. I am very glad to have found a recording of this opera.
