Book Description

June 1, 2006
A new Ronnie Ventana mystery After a fifteen-year absence Ronnie Ventana's high school friend, Analisa Bugatti, turns up in San Francisco with a couple of babies in tow. During lunch at a Chinatown restaurant, Analisa vanishes, leaving Ronnie with the two kids. Is Analisa in trouble, or simply criminally irresponsible? Rather than plunge the children into the bureaucratic quagmire of Child Protective Services, Ronnie gives her friend the benefit of the doubt and temporarily stashes the kids with a grumbling Blackie Coogan while she sets out to find her friend. It doesn?t take long for Ronnie to realise that Analisa is involved in a sting involving stolen babies ? but who is masterminding it?

Editorial Reviews

From Booklist

San Francisco PI Ronnie Ventana is delighted when her friend Analisa Bugatti comes to town. The two were inseparable in high school--until Analisa ran away with Ronnie's boyfriend. Ronnie hasn't heard from her since, but now, 15 years later, Analisa wants to make it right. Ronnie's understandably surprised when Analisa shows up with two babies in tow, but her surprise turns to annoyance, then anger, when Analisa skips out, abandoning her kids and Ronnie. Baffled by her friend's irresponsible behavior, Ronnie vows to find Analisa and figure out what's going on. With the help of her ex-boxer friend Blackie, Ronnie uncovers a pattern connecting a foreign embassy, a fake doctor, some thugs, and Analisa. Although readers may suspect what's going on well before Ronnie does, the female sleuth's brash personality, a fast-moving story, and some inventive plotting combine for an appealing read. White wrote two Ventana mysteries in the early 1990s but abandoned the series until last year, when Ronnie returned in Death Notes (2005). A welcome return for a series that should please fans of Marcia Muller's Sharon McCone. Emily Melton
