4.0 out of 5 stars From the Author of "The Cold Equations" August 22, 2013
By Elliot
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
Tom Godwin is famous for one short story, "The Cold Equations" (Astounding 1954)-- a great story which proved that science fiction was mature enough to abandon sentimentality and accept that the laws of physics will not always allow for happy endings.

This story (Amazing 1958) is not as good as "The Cold Equations" (nothing else Godwin wrote was), but it is a good one nonetheless. An exploration ship from earth lands on an inhabited planet, but the earthman and the aliens cannot understand each other's language, and their mutual distrust threatens to turn the confrontation violent. Not many science fiction stories dealt with the theme of the linguistic barriers between aliens and extraterrestrials, and Godwin handles the theme well.

4.0 out of 5 stars Solid story July 14, 2014

A good solid little story. It like a lot of science fiction tries to take a look at human nature and incorporate it into the story. Works well here.

4.0 out of 5 stars Nice short story from a lesser known author May 22, 2014
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
Interesting story about the problems Survey Ships are having dealing with newly discovered natives. In this case the Survey scout and the native species are at an impasse. One of them must trust the other and the consequences are potentially severe.
