5.0 out of 5 stars All time classic, October 17, 2001
By
This review is from: Cry From the Cross (Audio CD)
This is simply one of the greatest bluegrass/gospel albums ever recorded. It's all great songs, mostly done with a full bluegrass sound - sometimes even including twin fiddles that swirls and moans like nothing you've ever heard - for instance on the fast title track. And Ralph Stanleys voice! It's deep and mournful on his first ever acapella songs (Bright Morning Star, Sinner Man), yet strong and excited on the riviting shouting-songs (I Am The Man Thomas, Take Your Shoes Of Moses etc). His versions of "Two Coats" and "Death Is Only A Dream" are truly unforgettable. If you've only recently discovered Ralph Stanley due to the phenomenal sucess of "Oh Brother Where Art Thou", this is the record to buy. Ralph has made many, many great records, but none that's better than this.

P.S The two young teenagers that can be seen on the (excellent) cover, are none other than Ricky Skaggs and Keith Whitley, who made their debut here as members of The Clinch Mountain Boys. D.S

5.0 out of 5 stars ONE OF THE MOST BEAULTIFUL BLUEGRASS GOSPEL CDS THAT HAS EVER BEEN RECORDED, March 15, 2011
This review is from: Cry From the Cross (Audio CD)
Cry From The Cross is the most beautiful bluegrass gospel cd that Ralph Stanley and The Clinch Mountain Boys has ever recorded. It is also one of the most beautiful bluegrass gospel cds that has ever been recorded, comparing very favorably to the outstanding bluegrass gospel classics recorded by The Country Gentlemen and Ralph and Carter Stanley. Cry From The Cross is so very beautiful that the listener must play the cd multiple times in a row to truly appreciate its outstanding greatness. Of vital importance to the incredible success of Cry From The Cross are the particular outstanding musicians who recorded it. These musicians include Ralph Stanley, Curly Ray Cline, Roy Lee Centers, Jack Cooke, Ricky Skaggs, and Keith Whitley. This is the very best bluegrass band that Ralph Stanley ever assembled. These six bluegrass musicians blend both their voices and bluegrass instruments in such a very beautiful way that the listener cannot help but be totally captivated, swept away, and highly inspired by the highly compelling collective harmony that they produce. Roy Lee Centers sings lead vocal on many of these songs. His voice is so very smooth and so very beautiful. Ralph Stanley sings lead vocal on other songs. Ralph Stanley has perhaps the best bluegrass singing voice that has ever existed in bluegrass music. Curly Ray Cline is the best fiddler in bluegrass music. Ricky Skaggs is as multi-talented as any bluegrass musician that you could ever meet, and he has a singing voice that compares well to the singing voice of Ralph Stanley. All six band members are supremely talented musicians. Each and every song on Cry From The Cross is a bluegrass gospel masterpiece. Put all of these 12 individual gospel masterpeices together and you have one of the few very best bluegrass gospel cds that has ever been created. Cry From The Cross is a MUST BUY cd for every fan of bluegrass music.

5.0 out of 5 stars An Artist in Full, January 22, 2010

Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Cry From the Cross (Audio CD)
I am a Ralph Stanley fan and am happy to pay homage to his peculiar artistry. Like many, I first heard him in "Oh Brother Where Art Thou." If, as I suspect, that is all many have heard, then they have simply missed the call. Hearing "Cry From the Cross" for the first time is like going from a big modern mega-church to an out of the way little chapel where the Gospel is preached and sinners are saved. It is so real it hurts. You can almost feel the hammer and nails in Stanley's wailing voice, but there is redemption, too, and that's the point. Indeed, in "I am the Man, Thomas," he pierces the heart, then like a ministering angel, uses banjo and fiddle to send it heavenward.
