Justin Timberlake - Remixed by Dirty Vegas & Basement Jaxx.,
By The Groove (Boston, MA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Cry Me a River (Audio CD)
Justin Timberlake's "Cry Me a River" is a seething and almost vindictive breakup jam that's been getting some mild controversy over its video which features what may be a lookalike of his ex, Britney Spears. This single has a handful of ready-for-the-club remixes; the best of the bunch is from Dirty Vegas, who give the Timbaland-produced track a neo-disco edge. Another standout is a positively trippy makeover of "Like I Love You" from London's Basement Jaxx. These guys inject an acid-like house groove into this single, originally produced by the Neptunes. At first, I wondered how a song like that could get a house remix, but Basement Jaxx pull it off well. Timberlake is impressively shedding out of his boyband roots by aligning himself with some hip producers and smart DJs. If you like the original version of this single, then you'll be impressed with these remixes.

Remixes better than the original,

Forget the album version and the instrumental. This single doesn't "kick..." until the Dirty Vegas remake and the subsequent selections. Timberlake's vocals seem stronger on the dance tracks and his constant vocal "homage" to Michael Jackson doesn't seem so obvious.'Good effort from a man destined to have a lengthy stay at the top of the charts.

1. Cry Me A River (Album Version) 2. Cry Me A River (Instrumental) 3. Cry Me A River (Dirty Vegas Vocal Mix) 4. Cry Me A River (Junior's Vasquez Earth Club Mix) 5. Like I Love you (Basement Jaxx Vocal Mix) 6. Like I Love you (Deep Dish Zigzag Remix) This is the actual track list for this, This is the Second Single From Justin Timberlake which he co wrote. It a Bona Fide Pop Song with now Club mixes from the new Dirty Vegas and Real Remixer's Veteran Junior's Vasquez, who takes this gem to the underground level that most of DJ's won't risk playing, which is Sad, Having the Package of Looks, Star Power, does not mean a Remix can do him Justice. Plus the two bonus of his first single 'Like I Love You' Basment Jaxx and Deep Dish Giving the CD Disc Jockey a complete collection.

I got this remixes single March 29th, 2003 (Saturday). I listened to it when I got home. The remixes are okay, but I wish that it had the remix with 50 cent that remix is the best. I love the song Cry me a river but some of these remixes are just okay. I am a HUGE Justin Timberlake fan still, I love this guy! But I wish they would've made the remixes abit better. Like the one with 50 cent. :) But I suggest you buy it, if you're a Justin fan (Like me!). I will buy his next album also. His solo album is great too! Buy all of it!

awesome remixes,

I have to give it up to Justin Timberlake on his solo effort. He is one of the few boy band members who actually has the talent to do his own thing. This single is awesome, I really liked both the original versions of Cry Me A River and Like I Love You, but I have to say that the remixes are actually better, but then I am bias because I like dance/club music. In my opinion the two remixes that stand out the most are the Cry Me A River Junior Vasquez mix and the Like I Love You Deep Dish ZigZag mix. All I can say is if you like pop or club music then this single is for you, and I would definitly recommend it.

Cry Me A River Remixes Kick...!,

I love Cry Me A River and I was a little wary of hearing any kind of dance remix to it. After listening to it, I am amazed and pleased at the results. The CMAR and Like I Love You remixes are great for any party and I'm sure they're going to be played in clubs. Even my Rock friends who heard it thought it was by someone else and loved it. When I told them it was from JT they didn't believe me until I showed the album cover and Cd. I only wish that they had the remix with 50 cent in it. Buy the remixes, you won't be dissapointed!

Justin Timberlake receives the first commercially released single (in the US) of his young solo career, and it smartly includes two hits for the price of one. "Cry Me A River" is remixed by the ultra-hot and ultra-hip Dirty Vegas and by the resurgent Junior Vasquez. On the strength of a recent Grammy win ("Days Go By" for Best Dance Recording), Dirty Vegas seems to be riding the crest of a Tsunami at this point, and thus have the mix of choice for the majority of club DJ's. The Vasquez "Earth Club Mix" doesn't even show up among the mixes listed on Billboard's Dance/Club-play chart, indicating that his remix has not caught on in clubland. Like the average music fan, most DJ's have probably not noticed Junior's recent retreat from his House foundations (perhaps a major indication that House Music truly IS dead in America). As House Music is quite out of style currently, many will not give Junior's mix a chance given his background, and I believe unjustly so. With his remixes on Whitney Houston's Greatest Hits release, Vasquez proved to me that he is multi-dimentional and can indeed crank out quality remixes with the best of them. His remix of "Cry Me A River" is no exception. Every bit as beautiful and perhaps a bit more gothic than Dirty Vegas' take, I think that Junior nailed this one by bringing the moodiness of the song to the forefront. I will not go so far to say that I prefer it, but I would also not say that I prefer Dirty Vegas' mix either. Actually, the best remix on this release is the Deep Dish "Zigzag Remix" of Justin's first solo hit "Like I Love You." Last year's Grammy winners ("Best Remixed Recording" for "Thankyou" by Dido) created another monster here which is quite simply STOMPING! Although "Cry Me A River" is a better song on it's own merit than "Like I Love You," the Deep Dish remix of the latter is the finest piece of remixing contained herein. Thankfully, the rap by N.E.R.D. has been exorcised, much like Timberland's hip hop vocals are nowhere to be found on Junior's remix of "Cry Me A River." Instead, Deep Dish has pumped up the track with a deep bass line that screams to be PLAYED LOUDLY on all the best systems, (especially in the clubs!), and of course by a pulse-pounding beat. This is in-your-face energy reminicent of the great music coming from Europe in the mid '90's. The other mix of "Like I Love You" is an Electronic oddity by Basement Jaxx. Their take includes a nice bass line of it's own, though it unfortunately includes the pungent rap which all but destroyed the original version of this song. Their (Jaxx) wayward stylings ultimately end up in an Indian-sounding tribute to their own hit "Romeo." It all makes for interesting listening, but is likely to be loved only by fans of Electronica. All in all, this CD5 is a very decent release, whose best quality is its name recognition, which comes in very handy in drawing attention to whatever track you choose to lead-out with. And I have yet to complain about receiving TWO big hits for the price of one!

Cry Me A River is an awesome song, but it was very overplayed. Still it's brilliant. The remixes are only better than the orginial & great for a party or just to dance to. These remixes are sly and original & include the vocals. I hate it when remixes have mostly music and no vocals. These however have everything. Another great remix CD that I've added to my jogging collection.

Cry me a club and I'll I love you,
By
This review is from: Cry Me a River (Audio CD)
This is really one of the best dance CD-maxi single to have emrged in a while. Included here are two club mixes of Cry Me A River and Like I Love You in addition to the original and instrumental version of Cry. The originals were urban-hip hop and R&B tinged songs that feature Timberlake in a funky mode. But on this single, Dirty Vegas, Junior Vasquez, Basement Jaxx and Ddep Dish - some of dance's best remixes, gave their brilliant interpreatations of the songs.Up 1st is the Dirty Vegas remix of Cry. After a rather disappointing remix for Madonna's Die Another Day, the threesome spun up some trademark electronic grooves comparable to those on their LP. Junior Vasquez's an old hand at re-creation. Cry becomes a trancey, aimed straight-at-dancefloor anthem. Basement Jaxx lends their hands to the first single, Like I Loved You and quickly, creates an electronic funk piece. What's best on this disc must be the Zigzag mix of Love by Grammy winner Deep Dish whose remix breathes new life into the original while retaining that distincive Timberlake style with his pitched falsetto intact. You just have to get this like me wo's nt a big Timberlake fan. |
