Book Description

March 1, 2002
Though life on the Micklemoor Estate in the Scottish Highlands is always tough, it is now under threat. The estate is not paying and is up for sale, with the jobs of Alastair McNeill and his assistant keeper, lan Benton, at risk. Their lives are made even more difficult by the arrival of a wildcat.

The wildcat must contend with the weather and her natural enemies as well as the animosity of Alastair and lan, but she finds a friend in Alastair's twenty-year-old daughter, Sheina, who watches secretly over her and christens her Hexa. Rob Vincent, who inherits the next door farm and turns it into a wildlife sanctuary -- which does not endear him to the two keepers -- works with Sheina to protect Hexa. When they rescue one of her injured kittens and attempt to tame it, the kitten -- and the secret of Rob and Sheina's friendship -- must be kept from Sheina's father.

Editorial Reviews

From Booklist

The animals inhabiting the remote Scottish Highland Micklemoor Estate are the true stars of Stranger's latest tale; people merely serve as facilitators. Twenty-year-old Sheina McNeill loves being the daughter of an old hunting estate's caretaker, but her life there is jeopardized when wildcats take up residence. Game is scarce, and the wildcats compete with the hunters for the limited resources. Entranced by the wild creatures, Sheina tries to save them from being killed. Rob Vincent, who inherited the next farm over, joins in, but their budding friendship causes grief with her father because of an ancient feud and signals a change in their lives. Rob's farm is actually an animal sanctuary, and in spite of the tension with his neighbor and his limited resources, he also champions wildlife. Stranger's vivid portrayal of the wildcat Hexa and her young offspring enables the reader to understand their struggle for survival, and this heartfelt novel provides a fascinating peek into the lives of both wild animals and the people who love them.
