4.0 out of 5 stars Remarkably mature music from this teenage musician, June 11, 2008
This review is from: Crying Melodies (Audio CD)
Shawn Wallace was 18 on this 1993 recording of straight ahead jazz standards and originals, yet his playing shows the poise and maturity that made DR. Billy Taylor an advocate, helping Shawn land a feature on CBS TV's Sunday Morning show in 1997. Crying Melody, his 3rd release received a well deserved 4 stars from AMG. Shawn's bandmates here are impressive. Drummer Ali Muhammad went on to be the drummer for the Lincoln Center Jazz Orchestra and is one of the best playing today. Marcus Belgrave and the late Eddie Russ, both Detroit legends add their playing and approval.Trumpeter Dwight Adams has since played and recorded with Marcus Belgrave, Rodney Whitaker,James Carter and the late Donald Walden, and tours with Stevie Wonder. Shawn is now a music educator at Ohio State University and continues to play professionally. Crying Melody is a thoroughly enjoyable and impressive straight ahead jazz recording with a remarkable collection of new and veteran players.
