A witch posing as an enchantress gives Poet Smurf an orb that supposedly gives him creative energy. He exposes other Smurfs to it. Soon, they have nasty attitudes and can do nothing without its powers. What the enchantress gave for free she now demands chores for. Her change from pretty enchantress to ugly witch is supposed to represent the ugliness of drugs. Adults will notice the message right away, but young viewers may not notice there's a message to this episode. It kinda reminds me of the "Good Times" episode in which Keith is addicted to alcohol, but this episode lacks any domestic violence. This episode would be a great starting point for parents to speak about drugs to young children. Even since D.A.R.E. was deemed ineffective in a study, I've wondered what could replace it. Discussions from parents may be one method. I liked that it showed some Smurfs resisting the orb and that it's suggested fighting the addiction will take hard work. This episode does have the pretty beings are good and ugly beings are evil dynamic that the Shrek series tries to explode. Still, I really encourage parents to show this episode to any youngsters who are learning about the Smurfs. If I were a health teacher, I might even show it to a class of high school students. This episode showed that the Smurfs were more than cutesy; they could pass on important morals. I can't applaud the creators enough for this one!
