this isnt youre typical hot cross. this album opts for a more restrained formula for most of the album. the biggest change here is the addition of background singing. while somtimes it comes off as slightly cheesy and almost thursday-esque its almost always tasteful within the context of the song. fans of saetia or screamo in general should definitely pick this disc up.

wow, hot cross blew my mind away. i first listened to hot cross and i was like damn. i first listened to fair trades and farewell and i couldnt belive how dueling guitars makes music so much different and wow, so UNIQUE. then i decided to listen to cryonics. i didnt like it at first because it didnt sound like fair trades. so i kept my head only in fair trades and farewells but thats when i decided to listen to saetia. now, i concider them the most unique and best band that has ever been out because they came out when the scene was only tough guy hardcore. they decided to put all that nonsense away and decided to create hardcore where u let nothing go away. u can tell vocals go as high as the can because they sing with there frikin hearts! well, saetia its so recommandable for those who are new to this music which i would say 90% of the overpopulated haardcore scene. but yea, then i listened to a new set of lungs and i found very good. its not there best stuff but u can tell how there music grew. then i bought the ep and then i decided to buy cryonics and now, i concider that cd the best one they ever created.
the secret to understand this music is by understanding their roots. saetia is their main root so go look for that first and then this cd. a dont be afraid of changing the music that u adore. its ok to let go of generic hardcore crap. love listening to new music.....

I couldn't believe how someone claimed fans of The Used will like this. They don't even fit in the same genre....
This CD has great moments. Dissertation: 14 and Figure Eight are as catchy as they come, but all other songs fit into Hot Cross's usual routine - hardcore dabbed with screamo. All lyrics on this CD are meaningful in some way. Casey Boland's guitar work is fantastic. Billy's vocals are extremely unique, but the same as they always have been. If you're enjoying this CD, don't stop here. Get Fair Trades and Fair Wells and take in their new sound. I imagine they're trying to sound less like Saetia as possible.

Their split with Light the Fuse and Run was great (though not as good as the LtFaR side), "A New Set of Lungs" had its moments, but this is just...ugh. Fans of the Used and Thursday will love it, and about half of the kids who liked Saetia, but if you're a fan of real hardcore this cd will make your teeth hurt. Too many calculated riffs, too much gloss in the production, and cheesy MTV-style 'emo' backing vocals. Technically, everything's brilliant (except for the vocals; Billy still can't do a decent scream), the musicianship is top-notch. But what's the point if there's no soul?
This is the new 'emotional hardcore', I guess: wimpy commercialized dreck that only white-belt hipsters will enjoy. It's about as close to original emo as Saves the Day. Whatever happened to Moss Icon and Antioch Arrow? There's no passion in this music anymore. |
