Review

Both heart-breaking and heart-warming, this story really does have it all ... You can't go wrong with Kleypas for a rewarding and deeply satisfying read. This is one of her best yet RT Book Reviews Kleypas is a gifted storyteller, and in Crystal Cove she brings us a hint of the supernatural to add sparks and sparkle to a beguiling love story which packs in some complex relationships and passion-fuelled surprises. Love with a deliciously dark twist ... Lancashire Evening Post A really engaging romance, definitely sexier than the previous instalments and the hero and heroine have quite a bit of spark ... A great series about friendships, love and a little bit of magic Book Chick City --This text refers to an alternate Paperback edition.

I am madly in love with Lisa Kleypas's Friday Harbor series!
For Love and Books
I wish I liked it more, seeing I really did like both Justine and Jason, but it just wasn't what I expected it to be.
Amazon Customer
The characters had depth, the magic/witch element was different & fun and the romance was classic Kleypas.

Witches, covens, spells and missing souls are not what I expect picking a romance novel. While all the characters were engaging, I would like a warning before I pick something with a storyline on the outermost fringes of my favorite genre. I can appreciate that Crystal Cove is a magical, mysterious place, but it was not the story I expected, or liked. It was implausible, it was unlikely, but most of all it was shallow and not at all what I expect from Lisa Kleypas.,

Ever since she has started writing this "magic" series, Lisa's writing has deteriorated to the point that I say "what is the point?". She was an excellent writer, but this stuff she is cranking out is just awful. Now, any minute her publishers will have a bunch of positive paid reviews placed on Amazon to drown us out, but maybe, just maybe Lisa or her editor will read one of the first 15 of the Crystal Cave reviews and just maybe there still is magic in this world, and Lisa of early years will return. Maybe Joe's story?

I've read everything Lisa has written, particularly enjoying her earlier series: Wallflowers, Hathaways, and especially her Bow Street series. Even the Travis trilogy, although I don't care much for 1st person narrative. The first three Friday Harbour books too ... but Crystal Cove lost me. Could be, in part, that I'm not a fan of paranormal writing, and I found the main characters quite lacking in depth and development; the chemistry between them appeared to me to be artificial and forced. Perhaps many readers found the discussion of the various kinds of witchcraft interesting, but, to me, it was tedious and overdrawn. And, I looked for, and missed, Lisa's droll, dry witticisms so often spoken as rejoinders by her characters! I'd so looked forward to this book, but my money was wasted and I plan to delete it from my Kindle. I do, however, hope to hear of further writings by this author, and perhaps I'll play it safe and wait for the library to carry them.

In spite of good sense I started to read and almost didn't finish this final installment of the Friday Harbor series. Rainshadow Road and Dream Lake were both boring and quite unlike L.K. This last book is almost as bad as 50 Shades of Grey and more boring than its two predecessors. I found myself asking, did Lisa Kleypas really write this book? Even the narration is bad, I switched to the audio when I was hard pressed to get past the first chapter in book form. To a story that is already uninteresting the narrator brings no vim or vigor. The characters are wooden, undeveloped and not likeable. The story line stretches the bounds of credulity and is full of contradiction while the dialogue is unrealistic and superficial. There are a lot of holes in the plot and in short Justine and Jason's story is stupid and uninteresting. Jason has no soul yet he wants to leave the world a better place. Justine is a witch but has a temper tantrum like a terrible two. Lisa Kleypas should return to what made her an exceptional writer. No one can touch her historical romance genre. My two favorites are Devil in Winter and Worth any Price, I have read and listened to these masterpieces countless times .... L.K at her best! The pleasure of books is to enjoy them. I have not enjoyed these last three books. I keep waiting for some of her old stuff to go to audio so I can continue to enjoy her exceptional writing, characters you care about and originality. This is my first ever review and I felt compelled to write this candidly. Lisa, I hope you read your reviews, please return to what you do best, I'll be waiting for your next historical novel.

I forced myself to finish the book and am glad I did not purchase it. The witchcraft, curses, soulless male, all seemed silly, totally unbelievable, as did relationship between small town inn keeper and sophisticated, worldly, jet setting entrepreneur. Jason was described as a loner, wary of strangers, yet falls for Justine almost instantly. Too much Pretty Woman here. Lisa Kleypas has been one of my favorite historical fiction writers, and I respect her decision to venture into new territory, but regret it left me cold.

I pre-ordered this and wish I hadn't!! I've read all her older books and series and enjoyed them. And I enjoyed the first three Friday Harbors (partly because I love the area) Each one was a little darker and less sweet than the last. Crystal Cove was dark and down right creepy (was she trying to please 50 Shades readers?). I read rom. ance for the fun humor, sweet story lines, characters I like and can relate to, and happy endings. Most of all I read them to leave me at each stopping point and most especially at the end feeling good. This story did not have these elements I read Romance for. The hero is too manipulative and clearly takes advantage of Justine - a character we've come to love from the other books. He does it "for love" that is just not believable and with too many betrayals. I enjoy light paranormal romances (such as Lynn Kurland) and some witch stories (mostly Nora Roberts) that even when dark or serious don't blur the lines between good and evil and keep the love story "true". This left me feeling so yucky after I had to find something else to read to "get the taste out." This is not a typical Kleypas story - and was so different from her others in this series I feel cheated. Can I get my money back? I'll read Lisa again but hope if she ventures this far out of the happy romance genre there will be a warning on the back!!
