Editorial Reviews

Review

Amelia Baldwin traveled to Winona's Opera House because of her talent for period costuming. She had been hired to costume a vaudeville revival, and she just could not wait to get to work. The feeling of deja vu was something she had not quite expected, and the gorgeous, if sad-looking, man in the portrait in the lobby looked a bit familiar; but she quickly shrugged it off as silliness and continued her admiration of the theater. A fall through the floor of the opera house stage, however, took her on a trip that she could barely believe. The clothes all appeared to be Victorian and the world around her certainly seemed to be turn-of-the-century - 19th century, that is! When Amelia comes face to face with the gorgeous man from the portrait - Michael Hayak in the flesh - the world around her becomes a confused and twisted dream. Here, in this new world...this new time...Amelia finds herself in a new body, loving a man she barely knows and caring for his now motherless child. She learns she was Michael's recently deceased wife's best friend. As Michael and his tiny daughter slowly absorb Amelia into their lives, Amelia is swamped with the feeling that things are as they should be. The love that grows between Michael and Amelia is passionate and alive. But Amelia is tortured by the thought that she will be pulled back to her time, and then there are those dreadful feelings of grief, guilt, and anxiety that keep clouding her new world. Crystal Memories is Ginny Aiken's newest book, and I'm delighted to say that her foray into the realm of time travel is absolutely wonderful! There are times when tears will blur the lines being read, while other times smiles will cross the heart and soul. Amelia and Michael are two of the most touching and well-developed characters ever. The love Ginny creates in this book is astonishing.A fast, but beautiful, read for a lazy afternoon! Treasure every word! Characters that draw themselves as real people. A love that is almost solid...tangible! Ginny Aiken brings vitality, passion, and heart-warming desire to the realm of time travel romances!Karen Ellington -- Copyright © 1994-97 Literary Times, Inc. 1.0 out of 5 stars Yuks! The worst time passage romance I've read in years!, November 10, 1997

Save your money... Don't bother to buy the book. The storyline is too far-fetched; the hero (a supposedly handsome man with a toddler daughter that will make any woman swoon!) is a real irritating male chauvenist! I wonder how on earth the so-called heroine (who hails from 1997 Minnesota, by the way) or any heroine for that matter from modern times, can fall in love with a presumptuous jerk like Michael Hayak. In short, how can any sensible heroine fall in love with a guy who EXPECTS you to take care of his child, clean house, cook etc. and is rude and totally presumptuous at the same time?! Oh and the hero expects the heroine to have romantic fantasies about him after the end of a tiring day of hard work too. Hogwash!

5.0 out of 5 stars This one portrays the actual worldview from the past!, December 17, 1997

These are characters anyone with a heart will fall in love with. Michael struggles to give the heroine the benefit of the doubt; she doesn't impose the standards of our time on someone who can't possibly understand them. The books centers on the questions of broken promises, building trust, and allowing love to rule over the tendecy to protect oneself. The characters come across as real people, not impossible constructs. Aiken uses language like a poet--a fun read, a language delight. When's her next one due??
