"Crystal Night" is the definitive account of the events leading up to and subsequent to what was called "Kristallnacht" by the Nazis. This infamous time in German history is now known in Germany as the Reichs-Pogrommnacht or the November-Porommnacht so as to make it clear that it was an action against German Jewry organized by the Government and the Nazi Party. The book follows the legal action against Hershel Grynszpan, the young man who precipitated the events. It also looks at the details of the meeting of Hermann Goering, Paul Goebbels and other Nazi and Government functionaries as they discuss how to deal with the widespread damage and looting caused by organized mobs and how to manage it so that the Jewish community carries the financial consequences. The book finally looks at the appalling record of apathy and inaction of other nations in the aftermath of Kristallnacht. Only England, of all the civilized Western nations, agreed reluuctantly to take in and save 10,000 Jewish children from Germany, Austria and Czechoslovakia. The actions of the British are recorded in the annals of the Holocaust as one of the rare displays of empathy of a nation for the plight of Jews suffering under a Nazi regime. Thalmann and Feuermann have compiled much important information that shows Kristallnacht to have been a harbinger in almost every way, except for the mass killings, of the horrible aspects of the Holocaust. The book is a must-read for anyone who wants to be taken seriously as knowing what Kristallnacht is all about.
