This review is from: The Crystal Ship: Three Original Novellas of Science Fiction (Hardcover)
I first read this book in the 1970s I suppose. The title story has remained in my mind ever since. I found a copy this last summer, and was happy to find out that the stories are as fresh and involving as ever.
This seems to be a neglected book, for some reason. The title story involves a 'superior' group of people who live in a ship orbiting the neglected world beneath. It tells of the heroine who comes to terms with those left on the planet's surface, and her fellow travellers who have forgotten the purpose of their life. Instead, they are almost constantly in a drugged stupor, perhaps to dull the realization that they have wasted generations of their lives. I can still feel the cold, harsh wind that blows through the almost abandoned city on the surface, and the strange pool that may be a transport system, or simply a means to an easy death. Update: I've re-read this book and have enjoyed it yet again. How this book can be so ignored is just a puzzle. A neglected masterpiece. |
