Grade 5-9 This sequel to Gom on Windy Mountain (Lothrop, 1986) and The Riddle and the Rune (Bradbury, 1987) continues the fantasy tale of Gom Gobblechuck. His earlier adventures finally reunite him with his mother, Harga the wizard, but The Crystal Stair starts right off with another parting. Harga is committed to fighting evil monsters that would destroy both the outer star worlds and the land of Ulm. Gom must become a wizard so that he can help his mother; the first step is to find a mentor. Harga gives him the names of three wizards, some magic tokens for protection, and a ring to help him find his way home. It's a new quest, but many of the characters are old friendsor enemies. Gom's search for a teacher turns out to be frustrating, but by the book's end he has one and is all set for his seven-year apprenticeship. Readers will have to wait for the next book to learn whether Gom becomes a wizard and is thus able to join Harga in her fight. The first part of the book is dense going. There is great detail about Harga's quest but no action, and there are many references to characters and events of the previous book. Gom's quest is another long journey, similar to the earlier one but less engrossing. The book will be of most interest to readers already committed to the series.
