5.0 out of 5 stars She is good
Crystal is a good artist and unfortunately so much underrated. Here you find a good dance album with much more than "la da dee"(gypsy woman) tracks. She did a great new version of Dead or Alive's "You spin me around". The known singles are Just a Freak and Say...If You Feel Alright . It's a good CD e.g. for you car - it keeps you awake :)

3.0 out of 5 stars "Storyteller" is better

4.0 out of 5 stars That "difficult" third album syndrome..., November 22, 2001
This review is from: Crystal Waters (Audio CD)
Although this is not Crystal Waters' best offering to date, I think
the previous reviews have been a bit harsh. Her first album, "Surprise", was an interesting introduction to her talents
where as her 2nd, "Storyteller" showed her natural progression
as a songwriter with various catchy, yet thoughtful tracks. I agree
her voice isn't the best but at least Crystal tells it like it is!! when it
comes to life or love and i'd rather listen to Crystal than say,
Whitney,Celine or the dreaded (gulp!) Mariah, all squeaking like
mice and a screamin' and a hollerin' down the microphone. Back
to this album, As I said before not her best but Crystal has
at least made Prince's old "Uptown" her own (one of the better
Prince cover versions of recent years). What on earth Dennis
Rodman is doing on this however is a mystery best left uncovered
but there you go. I like "Spin me" and "Easy" (this latter track is
dead funky). If you like Crystal Waters then this is still a must as at
least she has tried to move on with each album. It's what she's
going to do next that's gonna be really interesting...

4.0 out of 5 stars just a freak., August 11, 1999
This review is from: Crystal Waters (Audio CD)
much like rock's favorite icelandic diva, björk, crystal waters is often misunderstood and, therefore, dismissed. at times, her vocals are slightly flat and/or off key, they're almost always repetitive, and lyrics cover topics as disperate as homelessness, sex and parties. the youngest person to ever be inducted into the poetry society of america, crystal waters knows exactly what she's doing, both lyrically and vocally. for those still uncomfortable with her unusually vocal stylings and production techniques, _crystal waters_ is a wonderful introduction to this diva's work. less idiosyncratic than previous albums, _crystal waters_ has a slightly more polished and party-oriented feel, making it more accessible to the average listener. highlights include "say...if you feel alright" and "easy".

3.0 out of 5 stars "Storyteller" is better, May 20, 2011

I've had "Storyteller" for about 17 years and I have no idea why I never bought any of her other CDs so I decided to correct that. I purchased this one and the very first song was one I loved to no end. "Momma Told Me" was so catchy (and actually happened to me) that I spent an hour listening to it until I memorized all the words. It took me forever to get through the rest of the CD because I spent so long listening to that first song. I think "Storyteller" was more neosoul, more laidback, more soul, and this one had more dance tracks. This CD was cool though. "Say hey if you feel alright" reminded me of a blend of Total and Vibe mixed together during the chorus, but as soon as she started singing, it was purely Crystal Waters' style. I used to like those other groups/ladies, too, but Crystal's voice is what really gets me. She makes me want to get up and dance even to the slower songs (ex. "Female Intuition"). I really wish she'd reappear and put out a new CD but in the meantime I'll enjoy her older work. She has such a funky feel to her music. If not for her funk, it might be considered techno or dance, but it's that extra soul that distinguishes her from other artists. I don't think this CD was the same quality as "Storyteller" and I could skip past a bunch of the songs, but it's still Crystal Waters so I wanted it regardless. I wish I hadn't bought it from an incredibly annoying Amazon seller (man2god4ever), but it is what it is.

I LOVE this woman's voice! She reminds me of Stevie Nicks and I LOVE her lazy delivery! This album, her third, follows up two already (fairly) successful albums ("Surprise" and "Storyteller.") What makes this one special, though, is that she's turning up the "flava" here a few notches by taking on Prince's 1980 hit, "Uptown" and Dead or Alive's "You Spin Me"(elements OF it.) Granted, she doesn't do MUCH with Prince's song other than house it up, but it makes for an enjoyable listen. I'd guess that Prince liked it. I only WISH that she might have gotten her groove on with more Jimmy Jam & Terry Lewis material, as they did so much for her with the NBA at 50 song, "Say...If You Feel Alright" and had all the power to literally make her a household name with greater crossover (to Pop markets) potential. They (Jam & Lewis) did a pretty good job at recreating the Crystal "sound" too. Otherwise, it's one jam after another here on her 3rd solo release which should have been much better received and sadly, was not. The only song here I really don't care too much for is "Spin Me." The first six or seven songs kick MAD beats and the first single ("Say...") are all standouts. She ended up dropped (from Polygram)and signed to an indie label after this recording and this is sad, where she certainly IS major label material. Of her three albums, this one strikes me as being the BEST. Of course, this is a matter of individual taste. I felt that this one had the most variety and sizzle. After sampling the Price is Right theme song and scoring BIG TIME with her very unique, "Come on Down," she's been putting out material (and still topping the charts via indie labels and joint efforts with other artists.) In a perfect world, she would have either done a whole album with Flyte Tyme (which I think might have been "too R&B" for her) or gotten with the likes of perhaps Orbit or Mirwais, maybe even Moby. Crystal's got it goin' on NO MATTER what she does; she's just THAT kind of performer and the Dance charts aDORE her. It's not hard to see how/why. She's tight!

4.0 out of 5 stars Play it Loud & Get on the Dance Floor!, October 22, 2006
This review is from: Crystal Waters (Audio CD)
this album is great!!!! However, you've got to listen to it loud. play it loud and get ready to boogie......its the only way to appreciate it. the opening track, 'Momma told me', is a masterpiece on the dancefloor......'on my mind' is hot, so is 'uptown', 'female intuition', 'spin me', 'body music' and 'passion'.........gems to be enjoyed. so much so, that the biggest single off the album, 'just say hey', isn't even among the best.

4.0 out of 5 stars is it good or is it bad?, June 6, 1999
This review is from: Crystal Waters (Audio CD)
This is one of THOSE cd's - the songs that are good are really good, but the ones that are bad - well, they make your ears bleed. The good ones are the ones where she doesn't try to be more than she is - a disco diva. It's the numbers like "Female Intuition" that really hurt. By far though, the worst song on this disc is the HORRENDOUS cover/remake of Dead Or Alive's "You Spin Me Round (Like A Record), simply entitled "Spin Me". Not a true cover, but it does contain many elements of the song. The highlights? "Say...If You Feel Alright" is a great little foot stomper, as well as the duet with NBA star Dennis Rodman "Just A Freak"...By far her best album though (excluding "The Best Of").
