This violin has everything one would hope for in a beginning instrument for a small child -- passable tone, decent quality of violin and bow (and real horsehair, which is better than many beginning instruments), and a great price that keeps you from outright panic every time your little student looks like s/he's about to drop the violin onto the floor.

The case is extremely cheap and rather flimsy styrofoam that dents under finger pressure. A slight upgrade would not be a terrible idea since it'll be in the hands of small kids. The thin cardboard on the outside of the rosin held on for only about a week before needing to be glued back on, but the rosin itself is fine. The shoulder rest is absolutely NOT for a 1/10 size and barely fits my daughter's 1/2 size, so you'll need to get one separately or use the old sponge & rubberband combo.

All in all, though, the old adage that you get what you pay for applies here, and this package includes almost everything you'll need to get a little violinist started for an extremely reasonable price so you can save the big money for when they start playing concertos.

This is a really great setup for a beginning student. My son played this violin for about a year before needing to size up again (he's 5 now), and it's been a terrific instrument. His violin teachers have been impressed with the quality of the instrument, and actually, it does sound quite good. And owning one of these is way less expensive than renting! We just placed an order for 1/8th size. I highly reccomend this for 4-ish year old students starting out on the violin.

This is a Christmas gift for my 3 1/2 yr old. She has been asking for a violin for months after seeing someone play. This is adorable and will be perfect for her I think. I thought the case was nice considering the price, it even has straps on the back to wear it like a back pack. Set up was a bit tricky, a couple of strings came completely loose while I was attempting to set up the bridge. I haven't played in yrs so it took a bit for me to remember all the tricks. I still need to dig out my old tuner and get it ready to play, but so far I think I got exactly what I paid for if not more. This will be a great starter instrument for her.

I've been playing violin since I was 2 and a half and now my son has started taking lessons (age 3). I know how to properly string a violin, etc. For those having trouble, you might consider asking a violin teacher set it up for you.

We started out renting a violin for my son from a local music shop at a cost of $32 per month. For about that price, I bought this violin on the off chance that it would be good enough for my son to use instead of the rental. It's fine. Both the rental and this one sound just a little bit better than a cardboard box, but at this size, what do you expect? The thing stays in tune quite well. The spacing on the nut was very slightly off, but it hasn't made any difference. The bow has been shedding a bit, but with any new or re-haired horsehair bow, that is normal. The bow is made of actual wood, so you have to be sure your kid doesn't whack it on anything or it'll snap. It works and my son thinks it sounds great. This is the violin that has to withstand the process of a toddler learning to be careful with an instrument; I love that this removes the anxiety from handing a 3 year old a violin--if he ruins it, you're only out about the cost of a month's rental.

Our 4 year old son was very excited to have a violin "his size"! It is so tiny! Almost like a toy! But it is just the right size for our 4 yr. old who is small for his age. At first he complained about the chin rest being uncomfortable, so I sewed a padding to go over the chin rest with a sponge underneath. After I put that on, he just went to town "Fiddling" on his violin!
It took a little bit of work to put the peg drops on and get the bridge to stay in place, but that is normal for a new violin. It is a rather plain looking violin, but fine for a boy who is still learning how to treat things gently. The sound is good too. We were very pleased that we could get a decent quality violin for an affordable price! If you are not familiar with violins, I encourage you to do some research online as to how to tune, keep the bridge in place, put peg drops on, etc. before you get frustrated and blame the violin! We are looking forward to making many happy musical memories!

Adorable, perfect for a toddler up to a preschooler to begin learning techniques. Sound and e string not the best but serves purpose for a very young beginner.

We purchased this violin for my 3 year old son for his birthday, as he LOVES the instruments and tries to play them all. This is a perfect little violin for him! It even has his own case-just like his older sister's. The only small problem I have with it, is it needs a lot of rosin to get a good song on the strings. At this time, sound is not that important to him, so he doesn't care! For the money, it was perfect for us.

I thought it was broken but it just needed a ton of Rosin on the bow so now it works just like I thought it would. The two center strings tend to be really close and hard for me to play but this was bought for a three year old to play her own music and it's great for that. My daughter really loves this. I like the case and it's pretty close to the real thing!
