Amazon.com Review

Like Super Mario Brothers DX and several other recent Game Boy Color titles, Crystalis is an improved version of a game previously released long ago for the Nintendo Entertainment System. The NES version was released three years after Nintendo introduced Link to the world in his very first 8-bit Zelda adventure.

The story in Crystalis revolves around a young warrior who was cryogenically suspended before an earthly cataclysm that was scheduled to take place October 7, 1997. After the doomsday event, the earth is being rebuilt under the threat of trouble erupting again. After 100 years in a cryogenic state, the warrior is revived with the hope that he can stop the world from being destroyed for a second time. An evil menace named Draygonia is dead set on destroying the world, and it's your job to help the warrior stop him.

The game offers plenty hack-and-slash combat. A very Zelda-like inventory system is extremely handy, and the game relies heavily on special items. While Crystalis doesn't come close to offering up the same level of gaming experience as other games in this genre, it does offer an entertaining quest nonetheless. In the end, anyone who's a fan of Nintendo's Zelda series will no doubt find this a nice adventure to romp through (at least until Link returns). --Todd Mowatt

Pros:

  • Plenty of hack-and-slash combat
Cons:
  • Not as entertaining as others in its genre

Product Description

Cartridge Only CRYSTALIS for the Game Boy Color takes you to a post-apocalyptic world where an evil force named Dragonia threatens to take over. You must seek out the four powerful enchanted Swords of the Elements in order to defeat him. Explore a massive world, loaded with more than 70 enemies and 300 non-player characters to interact with in this action or RPG. Crystalis's quest is not a small one, however, as over 40 hours of gameplay are packed in for would-be heroes, with tons of side quests and over 50 items to find and use. For a real challenge, try to master the power of magic with eight different spells. Colorful and detailed graphics are accompanied by digital sound, which features full human speech to bring the world to life. Battery backup allows you to save your game to continue another day.

5.0 out of 5 stars One of the BEST RPG's ever, March 24, 2000

A nice mix of Zelda and Final Fantasy type games, Crystalis is a must for any RPG fan. You start as a simple character, armed with nothing but a sword. As the game progresses you gain more fighting and magic abilities and more areas of the world to explore. Because you can choose several different paths to take, this game is always interesting and has pretty good replay value. For those people who played the original version of Crystalis on the 8-bit Nintendo system, the Gameboy Color version has improved graphics, sound, AND some added areas and story line.

I am new to Crystalis and was very happy to play it for the first time. It has light elements of RPG and is similar to Link's Awakening DX (also a new game to me!) The world is beautiful in full color and the music will have you humming its tune long after you stop playing - if you can stop! The battery-backed save lets you save 3 different games, but it doesn't save EXACTLY where you were last, and there is currently no guide book for it. There is no bestiary list for all the monsters either. These complaints are minor, and don't detract from the sterling quality of this game at all. The swords doubling as projectile weapons are really cool and the game has an interesting magic system. You will love this game.

This game is so cool it makes me chicken slappin happy. You start out with only a sword and the beginning is fairly easy. I think that all role-players should at least try the game because your sure to love it
